Changes in Autistic Symptoms and Adaptive Functioning of Children Receiving Early Behavioral Intervention in a Community Setting: A Latent Growth Curve Analysis

Isabelle Prefontaine et al.

Summary: This study examined the changes in symptoms and adaptive functioning in children with autism receiving early intensive behavioral intervention (EBI) in a community setting. The results showed nonlinear improvements in adaptive functioning during the intervention and a small linear decrease in autistic symptoms from baseline to follow-up. The intensity of intervention, initial age, IQ, and autistic symptoms were found to be associated with progress or maintenance during the intervention and follow-up.

Long-Term Interparental Conflict Behavior and Knowledge Change After a Brief Family Intervention

Joel M. Devonshire et al.

Summary: This study used multilevel models to investigate the improvement of interparental constructive conflict behavior, conflict resolution, and conflict knowledge up to 3 years after intervention in the Family Communication Project (FCP). The results showed that parents in the two treatment conditions exhibited nonlinear improvement, with baseline marital hostility moderating this change. Fathers had stronger long-term treatment effects for conflict knowledge, and higher marital adjustment among fathers predicted less decline in dyadic conflict resolution after intervention.

Dyadic longitudinal models: A critical review

Masumi Iida et al.

Summary: In this review, the most commonly used models for analyzing dyadic longitudinal data are discussed. The definition of dyadic longitudinal data is provided to help researchers determine the appropriateness of these models. The three major models commonly used for dyadic longitudinal data, including the dyadic growth curve model (DGCM), the actor-partner interdependence model (APIM), and the common fate growth model (CFGM), are described. The discussion includes indications for each model, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. Additional thoughts are presented on the extension of new methods and challenges in collecting and analyzing dyadic longitudinal data, which may be helpful for future researchers in this field.

Helping couples achieve relationship success: A decade of progress in couple relationship education research and practice, 2010-2019

Howard J. Markman et al.

Summary: This article reviewed 34 rigorous evaluation studies of couple relationship education programs from 2010 to 2019, showing significant advances in reaching diverse and disadvantaged populations, expanding intervention effects, especially for high-risk couples. There has also been progress in delivering online education, shifting focus to individuals, and emphasizing youth education, but challenges remain in understanding program moderators and addressing emerging issues in relationships.

A randomized trial of relationship education using Within Our Reach for economically vulnerable couples

Sejal M. Barden et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of a relationship education intervention on emotion regulation, individual distress, dyadic coping, and relationship adjustment. The results showed significant improvements in emotion regulation and dyadic coping among couples in the treatment group compared to the wait-list control group. However, there were no statistically significant group differences in individual distress and relationship adjustment.

Laura E. Miller-Graff et al.

Summary: This study found that a brief family-based coping and support program (PPFF) for children and families in conflict zones can have significant improvements, comparable to longer and locally established psychosocial support programs. PPFF was also associated with positive implications for family-wide adjustment over time.

Conflict-Coparenting Spillover: The Role of Actors' and Partners' Attachment Insecurity and Gender

Caitlin S. McRae et al.

Summary: The study found that conflict between couples can affect coparenting behavior, with men being more vulnerable to the spillover effect. Women, on the other hand, are able to better contain conflict hostility from spilling over to family interactions when their own attachment anxiety and avoidance are low.

The Premise and Promise of Activation Parenting for Fathers: A Review and Integration of Extant Literature

Julia S. Feldman et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the role of fathers in early childhood caregiving, specifically looking at activation parenting (AP) behaviors. The study found that higher quality paternal AP is associated with children's self-regulation skills and lower levels of internalizing and externalizing problems, regardless of paternal age or indicators of socioeconomic status, or child age or gender.

Associations Between Early Childhood Parent-Child Attachment and Internalizing/Externalizing Symptoms: A Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis

Shaylea D. Badovinac et al.

Summary: Insecure early childhood attachment is consistently associated with both internalizing and externalizing symptoms during the preschool and school-age/middle childhood periods, with children classified as disorganized/controlling being at heightened risk. Insufficient evidence currently exists to confirm associations with (pre)adolescent externalizing and internalizing symptoms. Future research directions and clinical implications are discussed.
