Do weak institutions undermine global innovation production efficiency?

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of institutional factors on innovation efficiency in different countries. While previous studies have examined causes and effects of technological change, there is limited empirical research on efficiency in innovation production. Using data from 2018-2020, the study finds that higher levels of corruption and better regulatory quality facilitate efficiency in innovation production, while greater state fragility leads to inefficiency. These findings hold true for the overall sample and vary slightly for the OECD and non-OECD subsamples. Additional robustness checks also confirm the positive impact of corruption and regulatory quality on efficiency.

Knowledge diffusion worldwide: Role of university-industry collaborations and beyond
