Summary: By contextualizing Instagram and the Michelin Guide in historical, economic, and technological terms, this article explores their cultural impact on contemporary food criticism. While both platforms contribute to shaping popular understandings of 'good food', there are important functional and discursive differences in how culinary criticism is performed on Instagram compared to Michelin. Focusing on London's restaurant scene, the concept of the Instagram gaze is proposed to understand the representational repertoires and knowledge claims made by foodies on visual social media platforms, shedding light on the relationship between Instagrammers' culinary judgments and those of Michelin.
