Implications of carbon content for the processing, stability, and mechanical properties of cast and wrought Ni-based superalloy Nimonic 105

Stoichko Antonov et al.

Summary: With the increasing temperature and pressure requirements in land-based turbines for power generation, the study of high-temperature alloys becomes more important. This study investigated the effect of carbon content on the fabrication and properties of Nimonic 105 alloy. Lowering the carbon content improved the creep property and grain size, but also presented challenges in fabrication. Prolonged thermal exposure resulted in complex carbide phase transformation in the low-carbon variant.

Enhanced creep performance in a polycrystalline superalloy driven by atomic-scale phase transformation along planar faults

Lola Lilensten et al.

Summary: This study investigates the differences in creep behavior of polycrystalline Ni-based superalloys with two different Nb contents, attributing the mechanical performance variation to phase transformations along planar faults. The presence of stacking faults and their composition in the alloys are analyzed using electron channeling contrast imaging and atom probe tomography, revealing insights into the underlying mechanisms of creep strain rate differences. The findings suggest a potential atomic-scale driven alloy design approach for enhancing creep resistance by promoting local phase transformations along planar faults at 750 degrees C.

Microstructural evolution of Fe-20Cr-30Ni-2Nb-5Al AFA steel during creep at 760 °C

Andrew Peterson et al.

Summary: The microstructural evolution of an alumina-forming austenitic stainless-steel Fe-20Cr-30Ni-2Nb-5Al (at. %) was investigated after creep at 760 degrees C. It was found that the secondary creep rate was correlated with changes in the microstructure, with precipitation playing a key role and grain boundary strengthening gradually emerging.

Analysis of the elevated temperature deformation mechanisms and grain boundary strengthening of the alumina-forming austenitic stainless steel Fe-20Cr-30Ni-2Nb-5Al

Andrew Peterson et al.

Summary: The deformation mechanisms of an alumina-forming austenitic stainless-steel Fe-20Cr-30Ni-2Nb-5Al were investigated at 750°C, showing that nano-sized L12structured precipitates provided the majority of the strengthening and grain boundary precipitates acted as barriers to dislocation movement, ultimately leading to failure along the grain boundaries in all tests.

The formation mechanism, growth, and effect on the mechanical properties of precipitate free zones in the alumina-forming austenitic stainless steel Fe-20Cr-30Ni-2Nb-5Al during creep

Andrew Peterson et al.

Summary: The mechanisms of formation and growth of L12 precipitate-free zones in Fe-20Cr-30Ni-2Nb-5Al austenitic stainless steel during creep were studied. PFZs are formed after the dissolution of L12 precipitates due to depletion of nickel and aluminum, and little growth occurs until grain boundaries are covered by Laves phase and B2 precipitates leading to the depletion of surrounding elements. The presence of micro-cracks in PFZs suggests their weakness in the microstructure and their role as initiation points for fracture.
