Influence of natural resources, ICT, and financial globalization on economic growth: Evidence from G10 countries

Fu Ze et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of natural resources, information and communication technologies (ICT), and financial globalization on the economic growth of G10 economies while controlling for labor and capital effects. The study uses the cross-sectional-autoregressive-distributed lag (CS-ARDL) model with annual data from 1992 to 2020. The results show that natural resource dependence has a negative effect on economic growth, confirming the Dutch disease hypothesis. Financial globalization promotes economic growth, while the impact of ICT is only significant in the long run. The findings highlight the importance of digitalization and financial globalization for sustainable growth.

Migrant networks, international experience, and OFDI by EMNEs: Evidence from China

Xiaoyang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of international migrant networks on outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) by multinational enterprises (MNEs) and examines the moderating effect of firms' international experience based on A-share listed companies data from 2008 to 2020 in China. The findings reveal that migrant networks facilitate OFDI by MNEs, and firms' international experience positively moderates this relationship. Additionally, the facilitation effect of migrant networks is more pronounced in the context of greater geographical and cultural distance, indicating their role in reducing information asymmetry and transaction costs. The study also highlights the significant facilitation effect of migrant networks on OFDI in the service industry.

Corruption, democracy and the location decisions of emerging multinationals: evidence from China's cross-border mergers and acquisitions

Jiang Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the moderating role of democracy in the relationship between corruption and foreign direct investment. It finds that institutional context, specifically the presence of more effective democratic institutions, weakens the detrimental effects of corruption on the location decisions of Chinese multinational enterprises (MNEs). The study contributes to the literature on institutional factors in international business by simultaneously examining the effects of democracy and corruption on MNEs' location decisions.

George N. Ike et al.

Summary: The present study aims to determine the global environmental impacts of press freedom and internet access while controlling for the role of industry. The study finds that press freedom has a positive correlation with decreased CO2 emissions, while internet access has a positive correlation with increased CO2 emissions. Additionally, the relationship between internet access and CO2 emissions follows an inverted U-shape, requiring a certain level of access penetration to achieve carbon mitigation.

FDI, corruption and financial development around the world: A panel non-linear approach

Hadjila Krifa-Schneider et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the relationship between corruption and FDI by examining the mediating role of financial development in 80 advanced and emerging economies. The findings suggest a non-linear relationship between corruption and FDI, driven by the level of financial development in the destination country. In advanced economies, less corruption attracts more FDI above a threshold, while in emerging economies, corruption level is less influential.

Assessing the impact of fiscal transparency on FDI inflows

Lorenzo Cicatiello et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the impact of fiscal transparency on attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) and finds that higher transparency during budget execution can attract more FDI inflows. This positive effect is robust across different specifications and is additional to the general government transparency effect. Furthermore, fiscal transparency's role in attracting FDI is shown to be independent of other institutional factors like control of corruption and regulatory quality.

Digital media, control of corruption, and emerging multinational enterprise's FDI entry mode choice

Yi Li et al.

Summary: The impact of freedom of digital media in host countries on the internationalization decisions of emerging multinational enterprises (EMNEs) is significant but understudied. The stakeholder perspective and transaction cost economics play a key role in influencing the foreign direct investment (FDI) entry mode choice of EMNEs. Specifically, the presence of a host country with freedom of digital media can lead to an EMNE's preference for wholly owned subsidiary as the entry mode, especially when accompanied by transparent information disclosure and external control of corruption.

Uncertainty, financial development, and FDI inflows: Global evidence

Canh Phuc Nguyen et al.

Summary: The study found that countries with higher economic policy uncertainty receive lower foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows, while countries with higher financial market development attract more FDI. However, even with developed financial markets, domestic uncertainty can still discourage FDI inflows. Additionally, as uncertainty increases, FDI flows away from lower-income economies towards more stable, higher-income countries, reflecting the "safe haven effect."
