Linking external collaborations, eco-innovation and sustainable growth. An empirical analysis on the Italian manufacturing firms

Ernesto Cassetta et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the relationship between eco-innovation and business performance, and explores the role of external collaborations in explaining the economic effects of eco-innovation. The study finds that collaborations with supply chain and quadruple helix actors can contribute to firm growth by improving the effectiveness of different types of eco-innovations. However, there is heterogeneity in the relationship, with collaborations with public institutions benefiting process eco-innovation more and interactions with civil society benefiting product eco-innovation more, indicating the influence of market-driven factors.

Resource efficiency in the innovative and conservative stages of a firm's evolution

Barbara Kalar et al.

Summary: Analysis of close to 1,200 firms from four European Union member states reveals that firms in the conservative stage are more likely to undertake resource efficiency actions related to saving water, energy, and materials, while firms in the innovative stage are expected to focus on sustainable product design. Surprisingly, firms in the conservative stage perform more resource efficiency actions than firms in the innovative stage, indicating varying actions taken by firms in different stages under similar economic conditions. Support mechanisms are also considered in this study.

Summary: This paper examines how four barriers -technological, market, institutional and cultural - can prevent the implementation of a circular economy, and suggests that even small barriers could stop the emergence of a circular economy. The key to the development of a circular economy is to overcome barriers in technology, market, institution, and culture.
