Resilience, discipline and financialisation in the UK's liberal welfare state

Matthew Donoghue

Summary: Financialisation has become central to contemporary liberal welfare states, with an emphasis on asset-based welfare and social investment strategies to maximize potential consumers. The shift of risk away from the state and individualizing responsibility for economic wellbeing is facilitated by the concept of 'resilience', helping to legitimize and enforce financialisation in everyday life through the welfare state. This article highlights the role resilience as a social policy strategy may play in maintaining financialised welfare capitalism and furthering the financialisation of everyday life.
