Determinants of precision agriculture technology adoption in developing countries: a review

Smartphone use and willingness to adopt digital pest and disease management: Evidence from litchi growers in rural China

Summary: This study examines the factors influencing small litchi growers' willingness to adopt digital pest and disease management (DPDM) with a focus on smartphone use. The results show that smartphone use has a positive impact on the willingness to adopt DPDM. Other factors such as age, education, health, wealth, cooperative membership, and credit access are also related to the willingness to adopt DPDM among farmers. Furthermore, the determinants of DPDM adoption differ between smartphone users and nonusers. The study concludes by suggesting a digital inclusion agenda to promote smartphone adoption and use in rural areas for agricultural purposes.

Summary: Smart Farming Technologies (SFT), as smart devices in the cyber-physical system, can enhance farm management by generating a large amount of data that can be used throughout the supply chain. However, the adoption of SFT has received limited attention compared to other digital agriculture technologies. This study investigates the adoption of SFT and finds that farmers' intention to use is mainly influenced by performance expectancy, complexity, and social influence, while organizational supporting conditions have minimal effect. The actual adoption decision is positively affected by formal integration along the supply chain and farm size for non-adopters, and by individual intention to use and specialization in the arable sector for adopters.

The advantageous innovation traits for IoT adoption in smart agriculture include being simplistic, easily communicated, socially accepted, and having larger degrees of functionality. The diffusion elements predicting agriculturalists' adoption are the elevated levels of observability and compatibility of smart agriculture innovations, coupled with their low complexity. Barriers to adopting IoT innovations for agriculturalists include excessive complexity and minimal compatibility. Practitioners should promote IoT smart agriculture technologies to opinion leaders, reduce the complexity of the innovation, and provide more educational opportunities for technologies. The existing literature on IoT smart agriculture adoption with stakeholders and actors is limited, making this study unique.

Additionally, perceptions of behavioral control, injunctive social norms, gender, age, adaptation attitude towards climate change, and education level play roles in influencing the usage of DSTs for either farmers or advisors specifically.
