Media Flow in the Global South: A Multi-Modal Critical Discourse Analysis of Al Jazeera's My Nigeria

Watching Turkish television dramas in Argentina: entangled proximities and resigned agency in global media flows

Summary: The theory of cultural proximity, which suggests that audiences prefer content that is culturally similar, has been a major framework for explaining audience preferences. However, the success of Turkish television dramas in Latin America challenges the applicability of this theory. Through interviews conducted in Argentina, we introduce the concept of entangled proximities to explain different viewership experiences. We also observe that audiences recognize the influence of market forces but still derive pleasure from these shows. Based on our findings, we argue that contemporary audiences seek a desired proximity with both the past genre of telenovelas and the society depicted in them.

Netflix, library analysis, and globalization: rethinking mass media flows

Summary: The advent of subscriber-funded, direct-to-consumer, streaming video services has significant implications for global video distribution and the power dynamics in transnational media flows. This article explores the challenges posed by global streamers to existing communication and media theories, as well as the need for theory rebuilding to accommodate their unique features. By focusing on Netflix and analyzing library data from 17 national libraries, the study finds substantial variation in the content of Netflix libraries across countries, as well as a wider range of content produced in different countries. These findings provide insights into the operations and strategies of global streamers and inform the development of theories regarding their cultural role.

The analysis reveals the effects of different Al Jazeera subsidiaries on Qatar's relations with neighboring countries and uses the case of three Al Jazeera English journalists in Egypt to illustrate the worsening political relations.

Trade liberalization and gender gaps in local labor market outcomes: Dimensions of adjustment in the United States

Summary: The study shows that trade liberalization with China reduced gender gaps in local US labor markets, with more educated women entering and less educated men exiting the workforce, leading to a reduction in gender labor force participation gap. This intrahousehold adjustment resulted in women entering the labor force to compensate for the lost income of male partners who left, while also increasing female workers' unemployment rate and reliance on part-time jobs.
