In control of future time: Sense of control weakens the negative association between age and future time perspective

Tianyuan Li

Summary: Future time perspective significantly influences cognitive preferences, social choices, and subjective well-being in adulthood. This study examined sense of control as a determinant of future time perspective and a moderator of the relationship between age and future time perspective. The results showed that individuals with higher sense of control had a more open-ended future time perspective, and age was no longer associated with limited future time perspective for those with high sense of control.

Summary: Individuals who believe in fatalistic determinism are more prone to depression, with self-control and resilience playing mediating roles in this relationship. The total mediation effect accounts for approximately half of the total effect, suggesting that fatalistic determinism may increase the risk of depression by decreasing self-control and resilience simultaneously or by reducing resilience through decreased self-control.
