The unintended consequences of tolerance: The experience and repercussions of being tolerated for minority group members

Levi Adelman et al.

Summary: Tolerance implies non-interference towards disapproved actions or beliefs, allowing minorities to live as they wish. However, the underlying disapproval might have unintended negative consequences. This study uses a novel experimental method to explore the impact of being tolerated on well-being and future expectations. The findings show that being tolerated has less positive impact on well-being compared to being accepted, but more positive implications compared to being rejected. Furthermore, being tolerated reduces the expectation of being valued and dampens people's willingness to speak up against those who reluctantly include them.

Racial and Ethnic Discrimination in Portugal in Times of Pandemic Crisis

Ines Casquilho-Martins et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the process of ethno-racial discrimination in Portugal during the current global crisis. It reveals that although there have been developments in legislation and anti-discrimination measures, there has been an increase in racist and xenophobic phenomena. The study also highlights the rise of extreme right-wing movements and hate speech in online news comments. The findings emphasize the urgent need for actions against racial and ethnic intolerance, as well as more effective measures for ideological crimes.
