Cultural values of ecosystem services from coastal marine areas: Case of Taytay Bay, Palawan, Philippines

Lea Janine Gajardo et al.

Summary: The Philippine coastal marine ecosystem provides various ecosystem services and cultural ecosystem services (CES) are also important. Through interviews and participatory mapping, the CES provided by Taytay Bay were quantified and found to have specific spatial patterns and contribute to human wellbeing at a community level. The connection between cultural services and provisioning services needs to be evaluated holistically. Protecting key service-providing habitats leads to multiple benefits.

Sustainable fishery management trends in Philippine fisheries

Frazen Tolentino-Zondervan et al.

Summary: This paper presents a meta-analysis of sustainable fishery management strategies in the Philippines over the past 20 years. The analysis reveals that the themes of sustainability management in the fishing industry are predominantly socio-economic in nature, with a strong focus on social goals. The study also identifies the most similar and dissimilar fishery management themes based on clustering.

Factors that influence small-scale Fishers' readiness to exit a declining fishery in Davao Gulf, Philippines

Edison D. Macusi et al.

Summary: This study assessed the decline in catch in small-scale fisheries in Davao Gulf by examining the motivations of fishers to exit the fisheries when presented with cash incentives. The results showed that most fishers would only be willing to leave the fisheries if given a monthly subsidy. Fishers considered both fisheries and economic factors in their decision to exit. This study highlights the need for livelihood diversification, skills upgrading, and financial grants to reduce fishing effort and sustainably manage the fisheries.

Women's participation and support for the implementation of the closed fishing season in Davao Gulf, Philippines

Edison D. Macusi et al.

Summary: Women in coastal areas around Davao Gulf play various roles in small-scale fisheries, but their participation in fisheries resource management is often overlooked. This study highlights the need for their inclusion and recognition, as they strongly support the implementation of the closed fishing season and have valuable contributions to make in policy implementation.

Measuring Small Island Disaster Resilience Towards Sustainable Coastal and Fisheries Tourism: The Case of Guimaras, Philippines

Cherry Pilapil Anasco et al.

Summary: Small islands have unique environmental characteristics that make them vulnerable to hazards, but with proper assessment and planning, they can improve their resilience. The study conducted in Guimaras Island showed that the community is resilient to disasters and could have positive impacts on tourism development.

Immediate impact of COVID-19 across tropical small-scale fishing communities

Stuart J. Campbell et al.

Summary: The volume and value of fish catches by Indonesia's small-scale fisheries declined significantly after the COVID-19 pandemic, with more than 90% of active fishers and traders reducing their activities. Despite a decrease in the average price per kilogram of fish, fishers who continued fishing had higher catches and maintained their daily catch value. High value fisheries for export were more negatively impacted compared to lower value species sold in local markets.

Vulnerability drivers for small pelagics and milkfish aquaculture value chain determined through online participatory approach

Edison D. Macusi et al.

Summary: Climate change impacts on the fisheries industry can have both short-term and long-term effects, making it highly vulnerable. This study aimed to develop a vulnerability assessment tool to enhance resilience and adaptive capacity. Online workshops with stakeholders identified common hazards/drivers such as temperature increase, typhoons, flooding, and the recent pandemic, which have detrimental effects on coral reefs, fisheries, and fishing communities.

Assessing South Africa's Potential to Address Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation in the Fisheries Sector

Kelly Ortega-Cisneros et al.

Summary: The marine fisheries sector in South Africa is important for income and food security, but documents related to fisheries management rarely address climate change impacts and adaptation. There is a need for more explicit inclusion of information on climate change impacts and adaptation in order to ensure the sector can effectively adapt to climate change.

Perceived Vulnerability and Climate Change Impacts on Small-Scale Fisheries in Davao Gulf, Philippines

Edison D. Macusi et al.

Summary: Climate change has significant impacts on small-scale fisheries, including vulnerability sources, diseases in catches, and fishing farther offshore. Recommendations for reducing vulnerability to climate change include increasing financial credit access, combating illegal fishing, enhancing technical skills for coastal communities, and providing alternative livelihoods.

Vulnerability of fishery-based livelihoods to climate variability and change in a tropical island: insights from small-scale fishers in Seychelles

Daniel Etongo et al.

Summary: This study assesses the vulnerability of fishery-based livelihoods to the impacts of climate variability and change across two major islands in Seychelles. Results showed that fishing households on Mahe Island showed greater vulnerability on socio-demographic profile index compared to their counterparts on Praslin, while households on Mahe had greater livelihood diversification in terms of income sources. Further studies are needed to explore the role of subsidies and sustainable fisheries management, as well as a value-chain approach to vulnerability of small-scale fishers within the fishery sector in Seychelles.

Adaptive coping strategies towards seasonal change impacts: Indonesian small-scale fisherman household

Edi Susilo et al.

Summary: Small-scale fishers need to adapt to fishing activities based on weather and fishing season, with strategies including diversifying household income sources, internal family coping strategies (with humor being a common indicator), and external family coping strategies based on local community characteristics and culture. The model for strengthening household coping strategies involves collaboration between formal institutional roles and government institutions.
