Cultural values of ecosystem services from coastal marine areas: Case of Taytay Bay, Palawan, Philippines

Summary: The Philippine coastal marine ecosystem provides various ecosystem services and cultural ecosystem services (CES) are also important. Through interviews and participatory mapping, the CES provided by Taytay Bay were quantified and found to have specific spatial patterns and contribute to human wellbeing at a community level. The connection between cultural services and provisioning services needs to be evaluated holistically. Protecting key service-providing habitats leads to multiple benefits.

Sustainable fishery management trends in Philippine fisheries

Summary: This paper presents a meta-analysis of sustainable fishery management strategies in the Philippines over the past 20 years. The analysis reveals that the themes of sustainability management in the fishing industry are predominantly socio-economic in nature, with a strong focus on social goals. The study also identifies the most similar and dissimilar fishery management themes based on clustering.

Factors that influence small-scale Fishers' readiness to exit a declining fishery in Davao Gulf, Philippines

Summary: This study assessed the decline in catch in small-scale fisheries in Davao Gulf by examining the motivations of fishers to exit the fisheries when presented with cash incentives. The results showed that most fishers would only be willing to leave the fisheries if given a monthly subsidy. Fishers considered both fisheries and economic factors in their decision to exit. This study highlights the need for livelihood diversification, skills upgrading, and financial grants to reduce fishing effort and sustainably manage the fisheries.

Immediate impact of COVID-19 across tropical small-scale fishing communities

Summary: The volume and value of fish catches by Indonesia's small-scale fisheries declined significantly after the COVID-19 pandemic, with more than 90% of active fishers and traders reducing their activities. Despite a decrease in the average price per kilogram of fish, fishers who continued fishing had higher catches and maintained their daily catch value. High value fisheries for export were more negatively impacted compared to lower value species sold in local markets.

This study aimed to develop a vulnerability assessment tool to enhance resilience and adaptive capacity. Online workshops with stakeholders identified common hazards/drivers such as temperature increase, typhoons, flooding, and the recent pandemic, which have detrimental effects on coral reefs, fisheries, and fishing communities.

Vulnerability of fishery-based livelihoods to climate variability and change in a tropical island: insights from small-scale fishers in Seychelles

Summary: This study assesses the vulnerability of fishery-based livelihoods to the impacts of climate variability and change across two major islands in Seychelles. Results showed that fishing households on Mahe Island showed greater vulnerability on socio-demographic profile index compared to their counterparts on Praslin, while households on Mahe had greater livelihood diversification in terms of income sources. Further studies are needed to explore the role of subsidies and sustainable fisheries management, as well as a value-chain approach to vulnerability of small-scale fishers within the fishery sector in Seychelles.
