Dental cementum examination with SEM/EDX for unraveling details along the lifeline to assist identification of a female individual

Mimoza Ristova et al.

Summary: This study utilized SEM and Energy Dispersion X-ray analysis to examine the dental cementum of female donors who have given birth, aiming to investigate the impact of pregnancy and breastfeeding on calcium and phosphorus levels in metabolism. The results suggested that changes in Ca and P levels in the cementum could be related to the biological age of pregnancy, potentially indicating other physiological conditions or nutrition patterns. More extensive research with sophisticated techniques like PIXE is recommended to further explore the forensic value of dental cementum.

The accuracy and reliability of the Suchey-Brooks pubic symphysis age estimation method: Systematic review and meta-analysis

James V. Schanandore et al.

Summary: The study utilized meta-analyses to determine the accuracy and reliability of the Suchey-Brooks method, finding high levels of accuracy and reliability for both males and females. Differences were also identified in sample size and accuracy between male and female individuals.

Protocol matters: A need for standardized procedure in cementochronology

Eliska Zazvonilova et al.

Summary: Cementochronology is associated with high correlation and low differences between chronological and estimated age. Standardizing work procedures is necessary for wider use of the method. The study results show that the standardized protocol can provide accurate age estimation, but there are limitations such as increased variability in increment counts with age.

Automated age-at-death estimation by cementochronology: Essential application or additional complication?

Benoit Bertrand et al.

Summary: This article evaluates the feasibility of using a module to accurately quantify cementum deposits and compares the module's performance to that of a human expert. The study found that the automated module produced reliable and reproducible counts with a higher global precision than the human expert, but it showed higher sensitivity to taphonomic damages and did not avoid the trajectory effect described for age-at-death estimation in adults.

Dental cementum virtual histology of Neanderthal teeth from Krapina (Croatia, 130-120 kyr): an informed estimate of age, sex and adult stressors

Paola Cerrito et al.

Summary: This study validates a method to infer adult life-history events on modern teeth and applies it to fossil specimens. The researchers successfully detected and timed reproductive and other physiologically impactful events using synchrotron X-ray microtomography, and also made predictions about sexual dimorphism based on dental cementum microstructure.

Tooth Wear: Best Evidence Consensus Statement

David Bartlett et al.

Summary: The study found that tooth wear is common in more than 30% of the population in early adulthood and increases with individual age, but its impact in long-term clinical studies is still poorly investigated. Tooth wear can result in shape alterations and dentine hypersensitivity, but the process is slow and pulpal death is rare. The impact of tooth wear on patients depends more on patient characteristics than the severity of wear.

Current and emerging histomorphometric and imaging techniques for assessing age-at-death and cortical bone quality

Janna M. Andronowski et al.

Summary: Bones are dynamic living organs that undergo continual change throughout life. High-resolution imaging techniques have the potential to provide new information about changes in bone microarchitecture. Methodological approaches used historically by researchers to assess the products of remodeling are continuously evolving.

The effectiveness of skeletal age-estimation in the reconstruction of population survivorship in post-medieval Dublin

Melissa A. Clark

Summary: Bioarchaeologists have long used age estimates from skeletal remains to draw conclusions about past lifeways and sociobiological phenomena such as health, stress, fertility, and frailty. Transition analysis has been introduced to address challenges in age estimation, with promising improvements. Results showed that survivorship estimated from transition analysis was similar to that calculated from burial records in early- to mid-adulthood, despite representing different individuals.

The impact of activity on pelvic age-at-death estimation

Andreas Bertsatos et al.

Summary: This study found a negative correlation between skeletal age stages and certain femoral cross-sectional geometric properties, as well as a positive correlation with fibrocartilaginous entheses scores, especially in older individuals. Considering fibrocartilaginous entheses scores when evaluating skeletal age can provide further insights in age-at-death estimation.
