Biomarkers of hepatocellular synthesis in patients with decompensated cirrhosis

Berivan Gurbuz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize changes in hepatocellular serum proteins and evaluate their diagnostic value in cirrhosis. Untargeted proteomic analysis of serum from 29 healthy controls and 43 patients with cirrhosis revealed 65 downregulated and 16 upregulated proteins in cirrhosis patients. Hierarchical clustering identified two main clusters and six sub-clusters. The study also found that serum apolipoprotein AI may be a useful prognostic marker in patients with decompensated cirrhosis.

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency: A re-surfacing adult liver disorder

Malin Fromme et al.

Summary: Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is caused by mutations in the SERPINA1 gene, leading to the retention of AAT in liver cells and resulting in liver injury and lung disease. The Pi*ZZ genotype is responsible for severe AATD cases and can cause liver diseases in both children and adults. This review examines the relationship between genotypes and hepatic phenotypes, discusses the mechanisms of liver disease development, and explores diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for managing this disorder.

Patterns of pregabalin prescribing in four German federal states: analysis of routine data to investigate potential misuse of pregabalin

Ronja Flemming

Summary: The study found that some patients may exceed the recommended dose of pregabalin by obtaining prescriptions from multiple physicians. Specific patients are at increased risk of potentially misusing pregabalin, and these patients sought to obtain their prescriptions from physicians who were as loosely connected as possible.

Registry-based cohort study of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency prevalence, incidence and mortality in Denmark 2000-2018

John Acquavella et al.

Summary: Based on data from the Danish National Patient Registry and the Danish Civil Registration System, the prevalence of diagnosed alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (dAATD) in Denmark was found to be 12.9 per 100,000 persons, with an incidence rate of 0.90 per 100,000 person-years. Mortality was significantly higher for patients with dAATD compared to the general population, especially for children.

Risk of further decompensation/mortality in patients with cirrhosis and ascites as the first single decompensation event

Lorenz Balcar et al.

Summary: Ascites is a common first decompensating event in cirrhosis, with a high frequency of further decompensation after it as the single initial event. Patients with grade 3 ascites are at a high risk of mortality across all MELD strata.

Hepatic decompensation is accelerated in patients with cirrhosis and alpha-1 antitrypsin Pi*MZ genotype

Summary: The Pi*MZ genotype of SERPINA1 is associated with an increased rate of hepatic decompensation and decreased transplant-free survival among patients with baseline compensated cirrhosis.
