Effect sizes in ANCOVA and difference-in-differences designs

Larry V. Hedges et al.

Summary: It is common practice to adjust for baseline characteristics in estimating intervention effects in both randomized and quasi-experiments. Including a pre-test can reduce standard error and bias in non-randomized designs. However, the estimation of effect sizes, including covariate adjustment, has been given little attention. This article provides a framework and estimators for defining effect sizes in designs with a pre-test and evaluates them using simulations and real data.

The efficacy of individual humanistic-experiential therapies for the treatment of depression: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Kate E. M. Duffy et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the effectiveness of individual humanistic-experiential therapies (HEPs) for depression. The results showed that HEPs were effective in the short term compared to usual care and were comparable to non-HEP alternative interventions at post-treatment, but not at follow-up.

Symptom-specific effects of counselling for depression compared to cognitive-behavioural therapy

Ciaran O'Driscoll et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the differential effects of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and counselling for depression (CfD) on symptoms and the implications for quantifying change during treatment. The findings indicated that CBT directly impacted excessive worry, trouble relaxing, and apprehensive expectation, while CfD had a stronger effect on thoughts of being a failure and the associated change between being easily annoyed and apprehensive of expectation. The baseline for assessing change should be the first therapy session, and residual change scores should be preferred over difference score methods.

Prospective Evaluation of a Clinical Decision Support System in Psychological Therapy

Wolfgang Lutz et al.

Summary: This study highlights the importance of high-quality implementation of digital decision support tools in clinical practice, showing that therapists can learn from such systems and incorporate them into their practice to enhance patient outcomes, but only when implementation is successful. The results of this prospective randomized-controlled trial demonstrate the impact of a digital decision support and feedback system in psychotherapy.

Small Effects: The Indispensable Foundation for a Cumulative Psychological Science

Friedrich M. Goetz et al.

Summary: Research indicates that complex psychological phenomena are influenced by multiple causes, each having a small effect. However, the current publication culture values large effects while overlooking small yet real effects. These small effects can have significant consequences when considered at scale and over time. Utilizing big data, machine learning, and changing cultural norms can help advance psychology research and practices.

Measurement-Based and Data-Informed Psychological Therapy

Wolfgang Lutz et al.

Summary: This review discusses key issues related to outcome measurement and the implementation of data-informed and measurement-based psychological therapy in the field of psychotherapy. It provides an overview of outcome measurement and discusses different models, as well as important concepts related to modeling patterns of change. Rational and empirical decision tools are also discussed as the foundation for measurement-based therapy. Clinical applications are presented to show the potential of continuous outcome measurement in supporting personalized therapy and preventing treatment failure.

Person-centred experiential therapy versus cognitive behavioural therapy delivered in the English Improving Access to Psychological Therapies service for the treatment of moderate or severe depression (PRaCTICED): a pragmatic, randomised, non-inferioritytrial

Michael Barkham et al.

Summary: A trial comparing the cost effectiveness and non-inferiority of Person-Centred Experiential Therapy (PCET) to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for moderate and severe depression within the UK's Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service. Results showed PCET to be non-inferior to CBT at 6 months but potentially inferior at 12 months, indicating a need for continued investment in PCET training and delivery for short-term outcomes.

Personalized treatment selection in routine care: Integrating machine learning and statistical algorithms to recommend cognitive behavioral or psychodynamic therapy

Brian Schwartz et al.

Summary: This study developed a treatment selection algorithm using a combination of machine learning and statistical inference to recommend patients' optimal treatment based on their pre-treatment characteristics. The algorithm showed potential to improve treatment outcome for some outpatients, but further research is needed to confirm its effectiveness for all patients.
