Alignment of code switching varies with proficiency in second language learning dialogue

Arabella J. Sinclair et al.

Summary: Speakers in dialogue tend to align their language patterns with each other, including code switching. Alignment is considered an unconscious process that aids mutual understanding. However, in dialogues with L2 learners, alignment is influenced by proficiency and pedagogical goals. This study investigates alignment in dialogue between Spanish/Catalan learners and English tutors, analyzing code switching and its relations to conscious pedagogical choices, lexical overlap, and turn-taking asymmetry.

Lexical and syntactic alignment during English-Spanish teletandem meetings

Marije Michel et al.

Summary: This study investigates task effects in English-Spanish teletandem conversations, examining alignment in second language production. The results show that real pairs exhibit more alignment than random pairs, with syntactic alignment being more prominent than lexical alignment, while the task effects vary.

Effect of interactive intensity on lexical alignment and L2 writing quality

Min Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationships among interactive intensity, lexical alignment, and L2 writing quality in two variations of a story continuation task. The results showed that the multi-turn version, which involved more interaction, had a stronger impact on lexical alignment and improvement in writing quality compared to the single-turn version.

The role of input modality and vocabulary knowledge in alignment in reading-to-speaking tasks

Judit Kormos et al.

Summary: Our study investigated lexical alignment in a reading-to-speaking task, using two modalities of input text presentation. We also explored whether participants' vocabulary knowledge moderates the effects of text modality and difficulty on lexical alignment. Analysis of the speech of 128 Japanese learners of English revealed that participants produced fewer overlapping 5-grams in the reading-while-listening condition compared to the reading-only condition. However, there were no significant differences between modes of exposure for shorter n-grams. Additionally, students with larger vocabulary size exhibited less lexical overlap at the level of single words. The implications of these findings for language teaching pedagogy are discussed.

Alignment in second language speakers' perceptions of interaction and its relationship to perceived communicative success

Oguzhan Tekin et al.

Summary: Conversation is a co-constructed social activity in which L2 speakers align their behaviors with their interlocutors to create shared understanding. This study found that L2 speakers are generally aligned in their evaluations of each other and their perception of communicative success, especially in terms of collaboration.

Multimodal alignment in telecollaboration: A methodological exploration

Marco Cappellini et al.

Summary: This paper presents an analysis of interactive alignment from a multimodal perspective in two telecollaborative settings. It proposes a framework to analyze alignment during desktop videoconferencing in its multimodality, including lexical and structural alignment as well as multimodal alignment involving facial expressions. Two datasets from different models of telecollaboration are analyzed. The paper demonstrates a semi-automatic procedure to study alignment multimodally. Results show that facial expression alignment is a pivotal component of multimodal alignment in desktop videoconferencing-based telecollaboration.

The effects of speaker accent on syntactic priming in second-language speakers

Eunjin Chun et al.

Summary: This study examined the social influences on syntactic priming in L2 speakers, finding that speaker accents and familiarity with accents significantly affect syntactic priming effects in L2 English learners, and these effects and interactions change over time. The results suggest that syntactic priming in L2 speakers is socially mediated and can be better understood through a combination of cognitive and sociolinguistic models.

Visual Context Modulates L2 Long-Term Structural Priming for the Chinese Ba Construction

Min Wang et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of visual context on L2 long-term structural priming for the Chinese ba construction. Results show that the video and picture groups exhibited a significant increase in production rate in the short term, with the video group sustaining higher rates in the long term. Visual context enhances L2 structural priming, with continuous video context supporting long-term priming effects.

EXPLORING SYNTACTIC PRIMING AS A MEASURE OF IMPLICIT LANGUAGE APTITUDE

Shaofeng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the validity of syntactic priming as a measure of implicit language aptitude. The results showed that syntactic priming was dissociable from explicit aptitude, but it failed to converge with other measures of implicit aptitude and lacked predictive validity for L2 proficiency. The study also highlighted the multidimensionality of implicit aptitude and the need for further research into the construct validity of syntactic priming as a cognitive ability for implicit learning.
