A systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of cognitive interventions to prevent intrusive memories using the trauma film paradigm

Joost Asselbergs et al.

Summary: There is a need for effective early interventions to reduce trauma symptoms and PTSD. A meta-analysis on cognitive interventions targeting intrusions found moderate effect sizes in reducing intrusion frequency and PTSD symptoms. Visuospatial interference tasks were more effective than verbal tasks. More research is needed to test the clinical translation of cognitive interventions in reducing intrusive memories of real trauma.

Summary: This study found that Imagery Rescripting (ImRs) is an effective treatment for childhood abuse-related PTSD, while the current data does not convincingly show an additive effect of Skills training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR).

Preventing the onset of post traumatic stress disorder

Jonathan Bisson et al.

Summary: This review aimed to evaluate interventions for preventing PTSD, finding that there is no strong evidence for any specific intervention before or within the first three months of a traumatic event, but cognitive-behavioral therapy with a trauma focus showed the most promising results for individuals with acute stress disorder. Further research is needed to optimize existing interventions and develop novel approaches to address this major public health issue.

The effectiveness of dual-task interventions for modulating emotional memories in the laboratory: A meta-analysis

Summary: Dual-task interventions have been shown to reduce the vividness and emotionality of both negative and positive memories in laboratory studies, supporting the effectiveness of such interventions in attenuating emotional memories.

Selectively Interfering With Intrusive but Not Voluntary Memories of a Trauma Film: Accounting for the Role of Associative Memory

Alex Lau-Zhu et al.

Summary: Intrusive memories of traumatic events can be reduced through interference procedures, while sparing voluntary memory, which has potential therapeutic and legal implications. Despite differences in the role of associations between cues and emotional memory, the selective interference does not seem to depend on associative cues. This dissociation between involuntary and voluntary memory for emotional material supports separate-trace memory theories and has practical applications.

Summary: This study assessed the efficacy of memory consolidation/reconsolidation therapies for prevention and treatment of PTSD and re-experiencing symptoms, finding that certain interventions showed positive effects for specific symptoms, but most studies had a high risk of bias in methodology.

Investigating the frequency of intrusive memories after 24 hours using a visuospatial interference intervention: a follow-up and extension

Summary: This study investigated the effectiveness of performing a visuospatial task immediately after a reminder in reducing intrusive memories, with results differing from the original study's expectations. Despite using similar materials, there were no significant differences in the number of intrusive memories between the four groups.
