Impact of COVID-19 on domestic air transportation in China

Yongling Li et al.

Summary: This study identified the significant impact of COVID-19 and the related control measures on China's domestic air transportation. The number of newly confirmed cases and the implemented control measures were found to affect the number of operated flights. The network effect of COVID-19 cases in destination cities, lockdown measures, and different adjustment levels also had different effects on flight operations. The study highlights the positive impact of early-stage control measures on the restoration of the aviation industry and other sectors in later stages of the pandemic.

Risk of Coronavirus Disease 2019 Transmission in Train Passengers: an Epidemiological and Modeling Study

Maogui Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that there is a high transmission risk of COVID-19 among train passengers, but this risk varies significantly with co-travel time and seat location. As co-travel time increases, the risk of infection also increases, and measures should be taken to reduce transmission risk, such as increasing seat distance, reducing passenger density, and using personal hygiene protection.

Impacts of COVID-19 on aircraft usage and fuel consumption: A case study on four Chinese international airports

Dabin Xue et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic greatly impacted the air transport industry in China, leading to a significant reduction in flight volume and rearrangement of aircraft types. By analyzing flight routes and data from selected airports, it was found that the total flight volume decreased to 67.8% of 2019 levels, with a recovery time of about 2-6 months. Airlines mainly relied on certain aircraft types with lower fuel consumption to overcome the challenge, and by the end of 2020, fuel consumption and aircraft emissions had rebounded to about 0.875 of 2019 levels, indicating near full recovery of domestic commercial flights. These results may offer valuable insights for commercial aircraft management in other countries.

Hub airport slot Re-allocation and subsidy policy to speed up air traffic recovery amid COVID-19 pandemic --- case on the Chinese airline market

Meng Hou et al.

Summary: With international air travels largely banned due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, airport traffic recovery has become the primary challenge for major airports around the world. The liberalization of hub airport slots in China has accelerated airport traffic recovery and improved social welfare. Additionally, the study found that excessive subsidies after liberalizing hub airport slots may harm overall social welfare if the government focuses too much on airport traffic recovery.
