Flight frequency regulation and its temporal implications

Felix Presto et al.

Summary: This study investigates four different approaches for flight frequency regulation to mitigate network congestion, resulting in a reduction of 7.6-22.3 million ATFM delay minutes in 2040. Despite reducing the number of flights, average ATFM delay per flight decreases by 10%-27%, requiring airlines to increase average aircraft sizes on frequency-reduced routes to keep seat capacity constant.

Climate Impact Reduction Potentials of Synthetic Kerosene and Green Hydrogen Powered Mid-Range Aircraft Concepts

Daniel Silberhorn et al.

Summary: One of the major challenges in aviation is reducing its climate impact. Synthetic kerosene and green hydrogen have the potential to significantly decrease the climate impact. A comprehensive evaluation shows that by utilizing advanced combustion chambers and flight-level constraints, these energy carriers can reduce the fleet level climate impact by more than 75%.

The contribution of global aviation to anthropogenic climate forcing for 2000 to 2018

D. S. Lee et al.

Summary: Global aviation operations contribute to anthropogenic climate change by emitting carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, water vapor, soot and sulfate aerosols, and increasing cloudiness due to contrail formation. The growth of aviation activity and climate change impact has shown a marked increase in recent years, with contrail cirrus being the largest contributor to the warming effect.

Evaluating the climate impact of aviation emission scenarios towards the Paris agreement including COVID-19 effects

Volker Grewe et al.

Summary: Aviation is a key player in the global economy, yet it contributes to climate change through emissions like CO2. Despite efforts to reduce its impact through policies, regulations, and research, it is unlikely that aviation will meet emission goals aligned with the Paris Agreement, even with technological advancements and sustainable fuels.
