Meta-Heuristic Solver with Parallel Genetic Algorithm Framework in Airline Crew Scheduling

Weihao Ouyang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a heuristic solver based on parallel genetic algorithm and innovative crew scheduling algorithm to improve traditional crew scheduling. The method integrates CPP and CRP into a single problem and achieves crew scheduling through global heuristic search and adjustments. Parallel genetic algorithm is used for parallel computation and optimizing flight sequences. The experiment shows high optimization efficiency with a time reduction of 16.57-85.82% compared to other methods. The method achieves higher crew utilization ratio, managing almost 44 flights per month, and demonstrates good scalability and stability.

On the contagion leakage via incoming flights during China?s aviation policies in the fight against COVID-19

Sebastian Wandelt et al.

Summary: China has implemented strict policies known as the Circuit Breaker mechanism to control the movement of potential virus carriers in cross-border flights during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study reviews the evolution of this unique experiment in the global aviation system from a data-driven perspective. It analyzes 183 events from early 2020 to December 2021, describes the spatial extent and temporal evolution, and develops a regression model to understand universal patterns. The study contributes to the literature on aviation and COVID-19 by examining the challenges and potential of containing a global health threat through strict aviation policies.

A distributionally robust optimization approach for airline integrated recovery under in-flight pandemic transmission risks

Yifan Xu et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted the airline industry, resulting in diverse epidemiological situations, irregular flight bans, and operational challenges. This study proposes a novel model to address the integrated recovery problem for airlines during in-flight epidemic transmission risks. The model aims to recover aircraft, crew, and passenger schedules to prevent epidemic dissemination while minimizing operating costs. By utilizing a distributionally robust optimization model and innovative solution methods, the proposed model shows promising results in reducing infections and flight disruptions. It provides practical insights into critical parameter selection and their relationship with other disruptions, contributing to improved airline disruption management and economic loss reduction during major public health events.

Choice-Based Airline Schedule Design and Fleet Assignment: A Decomposition Approach

Chiwei Yan et al.

Summary: This study presents an integrated model for airline schedule design and fleet assignment, which selects from a pool of optional flights and assigns fleet types to scheduled flights. To deal with the computational challenge, a decomposition approach based on partitioning the flight network is proposed. The experiments demonstrate that the approach significantly improves profit in a simulated passenger booking environment.

Passenger-Centric Integrated Airline Schedule and Aircraft Recovery

Luis Cadarso et al.

Summary: Airlines' profitability relies on accurately estimating passenger demand, while passenger responses to flight schedules, fares, and available seats also impact competition. Existing passenger rights regulations can affect airlines' decisions and ignoring passenger response behavior under disruptions may lead to suboptimal recovery schedules. This study develops a passenger response model and an integrated optimization approach to recover airline schedules, and demonstrates the importance of considering passenger responses for airline decision-making.

Airline mitigation of propagated delays via schedule buffers: Theory and empirics

Jan K. Brueckner et al.

Summary: This paper presents an extensive theoretical and empirical analysis of the choice of schedule buffers by airlines, with the key finding that ground buffer and the second flight's buffer play a crucial role in mitigating delay propagation. The allocation of mitigation responsibility between these buffers depends on the relationship between the costs of ground- and flight-buffer time, with empirical results showing a connection between buffer magnitudes and various explanatory variables, including the variability of flight times.

Optimal Information-Sharing Behaviors among Hotels: Game-Theoretical Approach

Sungsoo Kim et al.

Summary: The lodging industry employs a variety of pricing strategies to maximize revenues. Information sharing among competitors can significantly impact hotels' profits due to the uncertain nature of decision parameters. This study explores how hotels decide whether to share private information with competitors in order to maximize profits using a game-theoretic model. Hotels are found to share demand information if there is a low demand signal, but conceal information if the demand signal is high. This research provides a standard price competition model that can aid hotel managers in revenue management decision-making, including room pricing strategy.
