The limitation of machine-learning based models in predicting airline flight block time

Ahmed Abdelghany et al.

Summary: This study proposes three machine learning models to estimate flight block time for commercial airlines based on explanatory variables known during the flight planning process. Data from 2019 domestic flights in the U.S. is collected to analyze the variability of actual block time and identify significant factors influencing the variations. The results indicate that seasonality, aircraft type, departure/arrival hour, and airport congestion are important variables in explaining block time variations. However, the ML models show limited accuracy in predicting block time compared to a median-based approach. The study also evaluates the trade-off between block time padding and expected flight delays, as well as the differences in airlines' block time padding strategies.

Fleet planning under demand and fuel price uncertainty using actor-critic reinforcement learning

Izaak L. Geursen et al.

Summary: Current state-of-the-art airline planning models have computational limitations. This article explores the applicability of machine learning techniques for airline planning and develops an A2C algorithm for fleet planning. The experimental results show that the A2C algorithm outperforms deterministic models and deep Q-network algorithm in terms of computational efficiency and complexity.

Sustaining aviation workforce after the pandemic: Evidence from Hong Kong aviation students toward skills, specialised training, and career prospects through a mixed-method approach

Cho Yin Yiu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the future career prospects for Hong Kong aviation students in the post-pandemic period, finding that there was no significant difference in perceived career obstacles between students with and without specialized training. However, final-year students felt they lacked non-technical skills more than non-final-year students. Additionally, students showed an increasing interest in broadening their career options.

Estimating entry counts and ATFM regulations during adverse weather conditions using machine learning

Aniel Jardines et al.

Summary: Convective weather has caused significant delays in European airspace in recent years, and climate experts predict an increase in frequency and intensity in the future. By analyzing historical data and using machine learning algorithms, solutions can be found to mitigate the impact of convective weather events. The study developed regression and classification supervised learning algorithms to predict airspace performance characteristics, with data sources including EUROCONTROL and EUMETSAT.
