Motor performance, praxis, and social skills in autism spectrum disorder and developmental coordination disorder

Emily Kilroy et al.

Summary: This study compares the social, praxis, and motor skills of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), developmental coordination disorder (DCD), and typically developing (TD) youth, and investigates the relationship between these skills in each group. The findings suggest that ASD and DCD show similar patterns of social and motor impairments, but differ in praxis impairments, cognitive empathy, and Theory of Mind ability.

Motor Skill Differences in Autism Spectrum Disorder: a Clinically Focused Review

Casey J. Zampella et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that motor challenges are pervasive among individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), affecting up to 87% of the population. These challenges are associated with core symptoms of autism and broader functioning, and can be quantified and treated effectively. Efforts to detect and intervene in motor function may also have a positive impact on social communication in individuals with ASD.
