Tracing the regional dual value chains: Measurement on the production position and evidence from China

Yaxing He et al.

Summary: When there is a lack of internal and external impetus for developing countries' economy, establishing a dual circulation system in both domestic and international markets is beneficial for promoting regional industrial growth. This research extends the measurement framework of production position and introduces the concept of dual value chain based on regional embedded international input-output tables. It reveals the characteristics of China's production position from a multi-dimensional perspective. The study shows that technological progress has a crucial role in optimizing the national value chain and has a significant impact on the dual production in the eastern and central regions.

Migration and growth in a Schumpeterian growth model with creative destruction

Carmelo Pierpaolo Parello

Summary: This paper examines the interaction between migration, innovation, and growth, finding that migration enhances innovation and growth in the receiving economy. However, implementing pro-innovation policies does not lead to increased migration when the technology gap is fixed. On the other hand, when the technology gap is allowed to adjust endogenously, implementing pro-innovation policies reduces immigration flows and narrows the international technology gap.

Factor-analysis-based directional distance function: The case of New Zealand hospitals

Zhongqi Deng et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new factor-analysis-based approach for directional distance function (DDF) analysis, which reduces reliance on price information for providing public goods. The empirical results from applying this method to public hospitals in New Zealand show improvements in efficiency, but also indicate the possibility of perverse incentives.

The impact of China's outward foreign direct investment on domestic innovation

Zhixiao Dong et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the reverse technology spillovers of OFDI on Chinese firms, finding a positive causal effect on invention patent applications, particularly for private enterprises. OFDI towards developed countries is more effective for promoting innovation activities than towards developing countries. Three potential transmission channels of OFDI are empirically tested: direct technology purchases, access to high-tech inputs, and international mobility of personnel.

A Survey on Income Inequality in China

Junsen Zhang

Summary: After successfully eliminating absolute poverty, China faces the challenge of addressing relative income inequality. Income inequality in China increased rapidly in the first three decades since 1978 but stabilized and slightly declined in the past decade, in line with the Kuznets hypothesis. The study also finds a negative correlation between income inequality and intergenerational mobility, consistent with the Great Gatsby curve observed in developed countries.

Trade, structural transformation and growth

Seung Mo Choi et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the impact of opening to international trade on structural transformation and output growth in a small economy with agricultural and non-agricultural sectors. The simulation result suggests that the model-generated growth magnitude is comparable to the 'growth miracles' experienced in newly industrialized economies, with trade policies, relative productivity between agriculture and non-agriculture, and the persistence of structural transformation process jointly affecting post-opening growth dynamics.
