Investigating the impacts of COVID-19 on aviation safety based on occurrences captured through flight data monitoring

Wen-Chin Li et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has raised concerns about pilots' proficiency due to the decrease in flight operations. This research proposes the use of flight data monitoring (FDM) to mitigate potential risks in flight operations. The results show significant associations between the pandemic impacts and FDM exceedance categories, flight phases, and fleets. Airlines should consider factors such as manual flying skill decay and lack of practice effects on operating procedures and flight deck automation when preparing for normal operations.

The Go-Lab Platform, an Inquiry-learning Space: Investigation into Students' Technology Acceptance, Knowledge Integration, and Learning Outcomes

Chi-Jung Sui et al.

Summary: Through the Go-Lab platform's inquiry-learning space (ILS), we investigated students' technology acceptance, knowledge integration (KI) process, and learning outcomes. The study revealed that students responded positively to the usefulness of the platform, high-achiever KI students constructed complex and diverse links among genetic ideas while low-achiever KI students only built simple links. However, the learning outcomes were similar for both high-achiever and low-achiever KI students.

Asian Students' Cultural Orientation and Computer Self-Efficacy Significantly Related to Online Inquiry-Based Learning Outcomes on the Go-Lab Platform

Hsin-Chueh Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the factors associated with the learning outcomes of Taiwanese junior high school students in an online inquiry learning environment. It found that Asian students tend to be tutor-oriented and collectivistic learners. The results revealed that students' collectivistic orientation and computer self-efficacy were positively associated with their learning outcomes. These findings highlight the importance of Asian students' disciplined personality and computer self-efficacy for online inquiry-based learning.

Do Video Modeling and Metacognitive Prompts Improve Self-Regulated Scientific Inquiry?

Yoana Omarchevska et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of combining video modeling examples with metacognitive prompts on university students' scientific reasoning and self-regulation during inquiry learning. The results showed that participants who watched video modeling examples with prompts had higher hypothesis and argumentation quality compared to the control group. Video modeling examples are a promising instructional method for supporting inquiry learning on both the process and the learning outcomes level.

Learning scientific reasoning: A latent transition analysis

Erika Schlatter et al.

Summary: The study examined the scientific reasoning skills development among fifth graders through analyzing worksheets filled out during five science lessons, identifying four distinct profiles of high achievers, low achievers, experimenters, and theorists. Children transitioned regularly among these profiles, and two possible pathways toward becoming a high achiever were revealed: from low achievers via experimenters or via theorists. Awareness of these individual differences can help teachers differentiate their science lessons.

Patterns of Scientific Reasoning Skills among Pre-Service Science Teachers: A Latent Class Analysis

Samia Khan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the scientific reasoning competencies of pre-service science teachers using a multiple-choice assessment, with a latent class analysis identifying two subgroups with distinct patterns of reasoning skills. These patterns included differences in solving tasks involving data analysis, drawing conclusions, formulating research questions, generating hypotheses, and judging the purposes of models. The findings suggest the importance of highlighting specific skills in teacher education to enhance PSTs' scientific reasoning competencies.
