Do the academician independent directors promote green innovation in enterprises?

Luxiu Zhang et al.

Summary: Using data from Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed firms from 2010 to 2020, the study empirically analyzes the role and impact mechanism of academician independent directors on enterprise green innovation. The research finds that academician independent directors promote green innovation by alleviating financing constraints, increasing R&D investment, and reducing managerial myopia. Their role in promoting green invention patents is greater than that of green utility model patents. Furthermore, their impact is stronger in non-heavy polluting industries and the eastern region, and is influenced by property rights and marketization.

Impact of Green Innovation on Firm Value: Evidence From Listed Companies in China's Heavy Pollution Industries

Zhaodong Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of green innovation on firm value in Chinese heavy pollution listed companies from 2008-2017. It finds that increasing the proportion of green patent applications leads to a short-term devaluation of firm value. Both financial flexibility and analyst coverage partially mediate the impact of green innovation on firm value. Firms can reduce the negative impact of green innovation on firm value by increasing executive equity incentive and the management-employee pay gap.
