Network evolution and risk assessment of the global phosphorus trade

Bing Li et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is crucial for food production, but its global reserve is unevenly distributed. As the demand for phosphorus products increases, international phosphorus trade becomes more intensive. However, the trade structure and stability bring potential supply risks, which are rarely evaluated. By using complex network theory, a phosphorus material trade network and a quantitative evaluation index of trade risk are proposed to assess the supply risk in different countries from 2000 to 2020. The findings indicate changes in the trade structure due to phosphorus reserve scarcity and trade restrictions, with Morocco becoming the largest exporter and India being the top importer. Developing countries in Africa face high supply risks in their phosphate rock and phosphorus fertilizer trade, possibly threatening their food security.

Modeling complex network patterns in international trade

Peter R. Herman

Summary: This paper explores the role of complex network patterns in international trade, finding that network dependencies are influential determinants at both intensive and extensive margins. Gravity models and ERGMs provide valuable tools for capturing certain network patterns, with each approach having strengths in capturing and replicating specific types of network features.

International trade reduces global phosphorus demand but intensifies the imbalance in local consumption

Zihan Wang et al.

Summary: International trade has an impact on global phosphorus (P) demand and local phosphorus footprint (PF), with developed and emerging economies playing a dominant role in P flow distribution. In most countries, PF is decoupled from economic growth, and high PF per capita in developed economies is driven by imports from developing countries. International trade reduces global P demand from agricultural production, but exacerbates the imbalance of local P consumption. Therefore, sustainable management of P in the future should consider the suppliers and consumers along global supply chains and the consequences from both local and global perspectives.

Most influential countries in the international medical device trade: Network-based analysis

Xiao Bai et al.

Summary: This study constructs a global medical device trade network and explores the criticality of various countries. The results show that the global medical device trade market is export oriented, and the US has a dominant position in both breadth and depth. Additionally, some countries play critical roles in the influence formation process of other countries.

Nitrogen and phosphorus trajectories (1998-2030) under regional development strategy of mainland China

Li Zheng et al.

Summary: A good understanding of the nutrient cycle is crucial for decision-making in nutrient management. Quantitative assessment of nutrient flow in mainland China under regional development strategy provides scientific reference for achieving coordinated economic and agricultural development globally. The results suggest an upward trend in national N and P surplus intensity over the last two decades, with a considerable geographical variation observed under the regional development strategy.

Influences of international agricultural trade on the global phosphorus cycle and its associated issues

Fei Lun et al.

Summary: Industrial phosphorus fertilizer has greatly increased global food production but also resulted in environmental impacts. Global agricultural trade has played a significant role in determining the future availability of phosphorus worldwide. Efforts to improve phosphorus use efficiency and global cooperation are needed to address future phosphorus scarcity and mitigate environmental impacts.
