School Engagement in Elementary School: A Systematic Review of 35 Years of Research

Juliana Martins et al.

Summary: School engagement is seen as a remedy for academic problems in middle and high school, emphasizing the importance of understanding it early on. This review aims to outline investigations on school engagement in elementary school to assist educators in comprehending research, designing interventions, and identifying new avenues for investigation. Results show that balanced support from peers, teachers, and parents positively influences school engagement, while common characteristics of the school context can undermine it. Interventions promoting school engagement varied in complexity, focusing on students' emotions, behaviors, experiences, and motivations.

Emotion regulation and student engagement: Age and gender differences during adolescence

Anabela C. Santos et al.

Summary: Research has shown that emotion regulation strategies vary by age, with some having a linear developmental pattern and others a non-linear pattern. Female students and the youngest and oldest age groups exhibit higher student engagement. The use of more adaptive strategies is associated with higher student engagement, and the strategy of "Refocus on Planning" correlates most strongly with higher engagement scores across all age groups.

Instrumental Mentoring for Young Adults: A Multi-Method Study

Lois Schenk et al.

Summary: In instrumental mentoring for young adults, the closeness between mentor and mentee is linked to instrumental compatibility, satisfaction, and perceived attitude similarities. The development of closeness for mentees often results from receiving instrumental support rather than being a prerequisite. Prior experiences of mentees may influence closeness levels, but this does not always hinder them from benefiting from their mentors' support.
