Apples for Audubon and Eggplant for Oya: Afro-Caribbean Diaspora Religious Practice in Sugar Hill, New York City's Parks and Cemetery

Summary: The historic Sugar Hill neighborhood in Harlem has public parks and cemeteries used by African and Afro-Caribbean Diaspora communities for religious activities. Through interviews and mapping, it was found that practitioners of Santeria, Vodou, and Yoruba traditions adapt to urban life by utilizing public space for their religious practices, which require interaction with nature and the physical land. The study argues that public space plays a critical role in facilitating the practice of these religious traditions, providing psycho-social-spiritual benefits to practitioners while contributing to the diversity and democracy of public spaces as theorized by Frederick Law Olmsted and others.
