Early internationalization and subsequent geographic expansion: An extended Penrosean perspective

Hirokazu Kano

Summary: Internationalization is a dynamic and continuous process. However, existing literature on international entrepreneurship lacks focus on the post-entry process of internationalization. To fill this gap, this study draws upon Penrose's theory and a judgment-based view of entrepreneurship to investigate the relationship between early internationalization and subsequent geographic expansion. The findings from a 19-year study on 75 Japanese firms provide evidence for the hypotheses.

Moderating influence of product diversification on the international diversification-performance relationship: A meta-analysis

Pratik Arte et al.

Summary: International diversification has a non-linear inverted U-shaped relationship with firm performance. There is no significant difference in the performance of firms from advanced and emerging economies, but the importance of intangible assets for diversified firms is emphasized.

International Diversification and MNE Innovativeness: A Contingency Perspective of Foreign Subsidiary Portfolio Characteristics

Mashiho Mihalache et al.

Summary: This study reconciles contradictory views on the role of international diversification for innovation by developing a portfolio perspective of MNE innovation, which shows that MNE innovativeness depends on the interplay of geographical and organizational characteristics of the foreign subsidiary portfolio. The findings suggest that institutional distance and asset diversification of the foreign subsidiary portfolio can constrain the impact of geographical diversification on MNE innovativeness.
