A Clinical Update on Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Arianne Sweeting et al.

Summary: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) refers to abnormal glucose tolerance that occurs during pregnancy and is associated with higher infant birthweight, as well as future maternal and offspring cardiometabolic disease. The prevalence of GDM is increasing globally due to factors such as rising obesity rates in women of reproductive age and revised diagnostic criteria. Although there is a lack of international consensus on the diagnosis of GDM, it is important to recognize it as an early risk factor for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, considering its long-term complications for both mothers and offspring.

Mental Health in Australia: Psychological Distress Reported in Six Consecutive Cross-Sectional National Surveys From 2001 to 2018

Joanne Enticott et al.

Summary: Australia's population level of psychological distress increased significantly from 2001-2017/18, with levels highest in women and with rates inversely associated with income. The prevalence of very-high distress and high/very-high distress increased in certain age and gender groups. Income was found to be strongly and inversely associated with distress. The apparent association between regional location and distress disappeared with adjustment for income.

Preconception mental health and the relationship between antenatal depression or anxiety and gestational diabetes mellitus: a population-based cohort study

Grace A. Thiele et al.

Summary: Antenatal depression and anxiety have been found to be associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). This study examined the relationship between antenatal depression/anxiety and GDM using population-based data. The results showed that there is an association between antenatal depression/anxiety and GDM, and this association varies based on mental health history. These findings contribute to our understanding of the impact of antenatal mental health on pregnant women.

Cardiovascular risk factors in women with previous gestational diabetes mellitus: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Maleesa M. Pathirana et al.

Summary: This study found that women with previous Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) have significantly higher risk for conventional cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors compared to women without previous GDM, with some risk factors observable within less than a year post-partum. Women with GDM may benefit from early screening for modifiable CVD risk factors.

Association between metabolic syndrome and gestational diabetes mellitus in women and their children: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Maleesa M. Pathirana et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found an association between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in women and children, with women with GDM and offspring exposed to GDM in utero having higher risks of developing MetS. Women with a history of GDM may develop MetS symptoms as early as <1 year postpartum.
