Beyond science and policy: Typologizing and harnessing social movements for transformational social change

Benjamin K. Sovacool

Summary: Social movements are collective actions by groups of actors with common agendas and tactics to achieve social change. This study examines the power of four successful historical social movements - anti-slavery, temperance, civil rights, and family planning. These movements took decades or even centuries to reach their goals and relied on a variety of strategies and actors.

Regime resistance and accommodation: Toward a neo-Gramscian perspective on energy transitions

Adrian Ford et al.

Summary: Transition scholars are now focusing on the role of power and politics in sustainability transitions. They use insights from neo-Gramscian scholarship to examine how incumbent actor resistance and accommodation shape regime stability and change. This approach enriches our understanding of both the power dynamics of specific incumbent actors and the broader system of power at play in transitions.

Rethinking the geography of energy transitions: low carbon energy pathways through energyshed design

Austin Thomas et al.

Summary: Energy systems are spatial entities that involve infrastructure, stakeholders, and the distribution of profits, environmental impacts, and societal changes. The spatial relationships between social and physical components drive the evolution of energy systems in response to technological advancements, economic trends, and policy directives. Transitioning to a low carbon energy system in response to climate change will require significant changes to all elements, with energyshed planning proposed as a method to capture and inform the design of a low carbon future.

What socio-technical regimes foster solar energy champions? Analysing uneven photovoltaic diffusion at a subnational level in Switzerland

Leon F. Hirt et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the spatial pattern of solar PV growth in Switzerland and identified different clusters of municipalities with varying socio-technical regimes. It found that solar PV uptake is greater in clusters with a prevalence of techno-scientific knowledge and market dimensions. The research suggests that different local actors can accelerate PV uptake using various strategies based on local specificities.
