Effect of stacking sequence on mechanical, water absorption, and biodegradable properties of novel hybrid composites for structural applications

Tamilselvan Manickam et al.

Summary: This study fabricated tri-layer hybrid composites using snake grass fiber and jute fiber. The mechanical characterization showed that the J/S/J composite had the highest tensile and flexural strength, while the S/J/S composite had better impact strength. Water absorption studies revealed that the S/J/S composite absorbed more moisture. Additionally, the S/J/S composite exhibited greater biodegradability.

Manufacture and Characterization of Cola Lepidota Reinforcements for Composite Applications

Remy Legrand Ndoumou et al.

Summary: This study presents the first works on manufacturing reinforcements for composite applications using a tropical fiber extracted from the bast of the Cola Lepidota (CL) plant. Different products, including yarns and fabrics, were produced and characterized for their textile and mechanical properties. The results showed that CL yarns have higher tenacity compared to similar products based on flax fibers, and the quasi-unidirectional fabric architecture exhibited promising tensile properties. The study also demonstrated that composites based on CL fibers achieved comparable tensile properties to those based on natural fibers.

Exploiting synchrotron X-ray tomography for a novel insight into flax-fibre defects ultrastructure

Delphine Quereilhac et al.

Summary: Flax fibres are valuable reinforcements for composites, but defects called kink-bands might affect their properties. This study investigates the pores within the kink-band using X-ray microtomography, revealing their organization and correlation with the fiber's ultrastructure. Local increase in porosity was found in severe defect zones along the fiber.

How can current German and EU policies be improved to enhance the reduction of CO2 emissions of road transport? Revising policies on electric vehicles informed by stakeholder and technical assessments

Leopold Peiseler et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the shortcomings of electric vehicle policies in the EU and Germany and proposes improvement measures. Through interviews with stakeholders, it is found that differentiating between different types of electric vehicles and reforming the existing taxation system are the most promising and likely to be adopted measures to reduce emissions.

Experimental investigation on jute/snake grass/kenaf fiber reinforced novel hybrid composites with annona reticulata seed filler addition

R. Prem Kumar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical properties and wear behavior of natural fiber reinforced hybrid composites with varying fiber volumes and the use of Annona reticulata seed powder as a filler material. The results showed that the sample with an equal proportion of snake grass and kenaf fibers (12.5% each) without filler exhibited excellent mechanical strengths. Additionally, the sample with 5% filler demonstrated a lower wear rate compared to the other samples.

Effect of the Fibre Orientation Distribution on the Mechanical and Preforming Behaviour of Nonwoven Preform Made of Recycled Carbon Fibres

Jean Ivars et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the mechanical and preforming behavior of a nonwoven material used for recycling carbon fiber, and finds that fiber orientation has a significant impact on both forming and tensile behavior. The tensile behavior of the nonwoven material is influenced by inter-fiber cohesion, with low cohesion leading to poor resistance to tearing. Increasing the number of layers in the nonwoven material reduces the impact of nonwoven anisotropy behavior under compaction load.
