Neuroprotective effects of curcumin via autophagy induction in 6-hydrox-ydopamine Parkinson's models

Hai-Jun He et al.

Summary: The study shows that curcumin has neuroprotective effects in Parkinson's disease, both in vitro and in vivo. It inhibits cell apoptosis and induces autophagy through the AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. This leads to reduced accumulation of α-synuclein and improved parkinsonian disability scores.

Evaluation of curcumin as add-on therapy in patients with Parkinson's disease: A pilot randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial

Hamidreza Ghodsi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of nanomicelle curcumin on the symptoms and quality of life of PD patients. The results showed that curcumin did not significantly improve the symptoms and quality of life of PD patients, although there was a potential effect in MDS-UPDRS part III. The main side effects of curcumin included nausea, vomiting, and gastroesophageal reflux.

Beneficial Effect of Melatonin on Motor and Memory Disturbances in 6-OHDA-Lesioned Rats

Lyubka Tancheva et al.

Summary: This research investigated the effects of melatonin pretreatment on memory and motor behavior in healthy rats and those with a partial 6-OHDA model of PD. The results showed that melatonin had amnestic and motor-suppressive effects on healthy animals, while it exerted a neuroprotective effect and improved memory performance in animals with PD. The levels of dopamine and acetylcholine in the brain of PD animals were restored to normal levels with melatonin pretreatment.

Neuroprotective Activities of Curcumin in Parkinson's Disease: A Review of the Literature

Eslam El Nebrisi

Summary: Parkinson's disease is a slowly progressive disorder affecting dopaminergic neurons, and the treatment with levodopa often leads to unwanted dyskinesia. The discovery of new therapeutic approaches to slow down or reverse neurodegeneration in PD is a crucial unmet need. Curcumin as a potential therapeutic agent for PD has neuroprotective activities, while alpha 7-nAChR is proposed as a potential therapeutic approach in PD.

Dl-3-n-Butylphthalide Rescues Dopaminergic Neurons in Parkinson's Disease Models by Inhibiting the NLRP3 Inflammasome and Ameliorating Mitochondrial Impairment

Rongfang Que et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that NBP exerts neuroprotective effects in Parkinson's disease models by reducing NLRP3 inflammasome activation and ameliorating mitochondrial impairments and increases in p-a-Syn levels. NBP can improve behavioral impairments and reduce dopaminergic neuron loss in MPTP-induced mice, as well as alleviate 6-OHDA-induced cytotoxicity, ROS production and cell apoptosis in SH-SY5Y cells.

Movement of prion-like α-synuclein along the gut-brain axis in Parkinson's disease: A potential target of curcumin treatment

Devina Chetty et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease is characterized by the aggregation of alpha-synuclein, leading to pathology in both the brain and gastrointestinal tracts. This review discusses the spread of alpha-synuclein pathology along the gut-brain axis and proposes curcumin as a potential candidate for preventing the spread of pathology. Potential dietary supplementation with curcumin may offer a novel approach to complement existing PD treatment strategies.
