Separate collection rates for plastic packaging in Austria-A regional analysis taking collection systems and urbanization into account

Dieter Schuch et al.

Summary: According to the EU Circular Economy Package, recycling of plastic packaging waste (PPW) needs significant improvement by 2025 and 2030. Separate collection remains the crucial process, and the performance of current systems in Austria was analyzed. Results showed that rural areas had the highest collection rates of 74-77%, while urban areas had the lowest rate of 56%. A shift to target all plastic packaging instead of just plastic bottles is crucial to improve separate collection rates.

A GIS-based novel approach for suitable sanitary landfill site selection using integrated fuzzy analytic hierarchy process and machine learning algorithms

Mohd Mohsin et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel approach using integrated fuzzy analytic hierarchy process and machine learning models for selecting landfill sites and achieving sustainable solid waste management in Aligarh city, India. The results identified significant factors such as land value, distance from residential roads and healthcare facilities, and normalized difference built-up index. Seven potential landfill sites were identified, with three determined as the most suitable locations.

Environmental risk assessment and factors influencing heavy metal concentrations in the soil of municipal solid waste landfills

Shuangchao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the environmental risk assessment and factors influencing heavy metals in the soil at municipal solid waste landfill sites through literature review, field survey, and statistical methods. The results indicated that the dominant contamination in the soil was caused by chromium and zinc, with more significant contamination found in non-sanitary landfill sites. Arsenic and cadmium were found to potentially have carcinogenic health effects. There were correlations between the concentrations of certain heavy metals and factors such as landfill age and rainfall. Proper site selection, protective systems, standardized management, and ongoing monitoring are necessary for effective prevention of ecological risks.

Determination of risk of spontaneous waste ignition and leachate quality for open municipal solid waste dumpsite

Digambar Chavan et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the potential risk of spontaneous ignition of landfilled waste in India, finding that old waste is more prone to ignition than fresh waste due to lower moisture content. Factors such as CO levels, LST, and leachate pollution index also varied across different seasons.

Municipal Solid Waste Management and Adverse Health Outcomes: A Systematic Review

Giovanni Vinti et al.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to update and expand the epidemiological evidence on the association between municipal solid waste management practices and health risks for resident populations. The evidence suggests potential risks of adverse birth outcomes, mortality, respiratory diseases, and negative mental health effects for residents living near landfills, incinerators, and dumpsites/open burning sites. However, more research is needed to establish a strong relationship between specific exposure and outcomes, with gaps in the evidence remaining.
