First-principles Phonon Calculations with Phonopy and Phono3py

Atsushi Togo

Summary: With the advancement of calculation methods and increasing computer power, first-principles phonon calculations are becoming more accurate in predicting the harmonic, quasi-harmonic, and anharmonic phonon properties of crystals. This review examines the basic formulas for phonon properties and provides examples of phonon calculations using the phonon calculation codes, phonopy and phono3py, combined with first-principles calculations. The automation of first-principles phonon calculations is of great interest to the scientific community, and this review also presents several practical applications of this automated approach.

First-principles insights into the mechanical, optoelectronic, thermophysical, and lattice dynamical properties of binary topological semimetal BaGa2

M. I. Naher et al.

Summary: In this study, the structural properties, electronic band structure, and optical properties of the binary topological semimetal BaGa2 were investigated in detail using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. The compound is found to possess stable mechanical and dynamic properties, suitable for use as a reflecting material and efficient absorber of ultraviolet radiation. Reflectivity spectra show strong anisotropy, and the refractive index is high in the infrared to visible range. All energy-dependent optical parameters exhibit metallic features and are in accordance with bulk electronic density of states calculations.

Summary: This research investigated the electronic, optical, and thermoelectric properties of chalcogenide materials SrCdSnX4 (X = S, Se, Te) using first-principles calculations based on DFT. The study revealed that SrCdSnTe4 displayed better absorption in the visible range, while the other two materials performed well in the ultraviolet region. The results also showed an anisotropy polarization of all compounds, making them suitable for optoelectronic device applications.

First-principles study of electronic and optical properties of ternary compounds AuBX2 (X = S, Se, Te) and AuMTe2 (M = Al, In, Ga)

Muhammad Shahzad Yaseen et al.

Summary: The study found that AuBX2 and AuMTe2 crystals have finite band gaps under mBJ and SOC, with some compounds having indirect band gaps and tellurides being direct band-gap semiconductors. Calculated optical properties show these compounds have low energy loss and reflectivity, as well as high absorption capability in the infrared and visible regions, suggesting potential for solar cell applications.

Enhanced atomic ordering leads to high thermoelectric performance in AgSbTe2

Subhajit Roychowdhury et al.

Summary: By optimizing atomic disorder and cadmium doping in polycrystalline silver antimony telluride, high thermoelectric performance with near room-temperature figure of merit ZT of around 1.5 and maximum ZT of around 2.6 at 573 kelvin is achieved. This strategy of enhancing cationic ordering while reducing lattice thermal conductivity is applicable to most thermoelectric materials with inherent atomic disorder.

Computationally Guided Synthesis of High Performance Thermoelectric Materials: Defect Engineering in AgGaTe2

Yaqiong Zhong et al.

Summary: The rational synthesis of high-performance thermoelectric materials guided by theoretical design is still in its infancy. Researchers have predicted and experimentally confirmed a new defective compound, AgGaTe2, with simultaneous Ag deficiency and isoelectronic substitution of In on Ga-site. Through controlling defects, the AgGaTe2 system can achieve extremely low lattice thermal conductivity, resulting in the highest TE figure of merit recorded for silver-based ternary chalcopyrite semiconductors to date.

Structural features and thermoelectric performance of chalcopyrite Cu(In, Ga)Te2 system by isoelectronic substitution

Shuping Deng et al.

Summary: A series of CuIn1-xGaxTe2 samples were prepared by vacuum melting combined with spark plasma sintering process in this study. The samples exhibited chalcopyrite structure and excellent thermal stability. Ga tended to replace In site, and the room-temperature carrier concentration of all p-type samples varied with carrier mobility. The Ga-doped samples showed significantly reduced total thermal conductivity, with the CuIn0.8Ga0.2Te2 sample achieving a maximum ZT value of 0.80 at 773 K.

Structural study and evaluation of thermoelectric properties of single-phase isocubanite (CuFe2S3) synthesized via an ultra-fast efficient microwave radiation technique

Tristan Barbier et al.

Summary: Current state-of-the-art thermoelectric materials are costly, scarce, and toxic, while copper-based sulfide compounds have emerged as promising alternatives. The successful synthesis of single-phase cubic isocubanite using mechanical-alloying combined with microwave-assisted synthesis has resulted in a maximum thermoelectric figure of merit of approximately 0.14 at 673 K. Detailed insights into the structure of isocubanite, confirmed through X-ray diffraction data refinement and first-principles calculations, reveal an inherently disordered arrangement of Cu-Fe cations occupying the 4d sites of the cubic structure.
