Post-hydrolysis versus side-stream ammonia stripping in semi-continuous two-stage anaerobic digestion of high nitrogen feedstock

M. Adghim et al.

Summary: This study compares the semi-continuous operation of post-hydrolysis ammonia stripping (PHAS) with the commonly used side-stream ammonia stripping (SSAS). Results show that air and renewable natural gas (RNG) can remove 70-78% and 50-58% of ammonia, respectively. PHAS demonstrates greater flexibility and resilience when parameters are changed. Volumetric and specific biogas production from PHAS and SSAS scenarios are 1.91 and 1.26 L/L/day, and 831 and 701 L biogas/kg VS/day, respectively, under organic loading rates of 2.61 and 1.8 g VS/L/day.
