Responses of microbial interactions to elevated salinity in activated sludge microbial community

Tao Ya et al.

Summary: Biological treatment processes play a crucial role in sewage purification, and microbial interactions have a significant impact on treatment performance. This study investigated the microbial interactions in an activated sludge system under elevated salinity using association network analysis. The results showed that higher salinity led to lower microbial diversity and more competitive overall networks, resulting in reduced treatment process efficiency. The subnetworks of major phyla and functional bacteria differed significantly under elevated salinity, with Nitrosomonas making a greater contribution to nitrification and denitrifiers establishing more cooperative relationships to resist salinity stress. Keystone species crucial for process stability were found to be dynamic and less abundant under salinity disturbance. This study deepened our understanding of microbial interactions in activated sludge systems under elevated salinity.

Efficacy of simultaneous advanced oxidation and adsorption for treating municipal wastewater for indirect potable reuse

P. Ganesh Kumar et al.

Summary: The main aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of different advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) combined with adsorption for the treatment of municipal wastewater. The results demonstrated that UV/PMS, O3/PMS, UV/O3/H2O2, and UV/O3/MnO2 processes combined with a glass packed bed reactor (GPBR) achieved significant removal of organic pollutants and complete inactivation of bacterial count. The combination of AOP and adsorption also resulted in reduced concentrations of by-products in the treated effluent, making it suitable for indirect potable reuse (IPR) applications.

Integration of EBPR with mainstream anammox process to treat real municipal wastewater: Process performance and microbiology

Soklida Hong et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of integrated fixed film activated sludge (IFAS) technology for simultaneous removal of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in municipal wastewater. The technology showed robust performance with high removal efficiencies for both TIN and P. The study also identified the key microbial groups responsible for the removal processes.

Variations in antibiotic resistance genes and microbial community in sludges passing through biological nutrient removal and anaerobic digestion processes in municipal wastewater treatment plants

Shahbaz Raza et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an ongoing pandemic that is spread silently. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) serve as a potential source of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which can pose a threat to public health. This study examined the changes in ARG abundance and microbial community structure in two WWTPs, revealing the importance of microbial communities in determining ARG abundance.

Effect of two broad-spectrum fungicides on the microbial communities of a soil subjected to different degrees of water erosion

Romina A. Verdenelli et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of two fungicides on soil microbial communities under different degrees of water erosion was investigated. The results showed that soil enzyme activities were lowest in moderately eroded soil and highest in non-eroded soil. In addition, the use of fungicides reduced bacterial and fungal populations, affecting soil microbial community structure and function.

Performance Evaluation of A/O Membrane Bioreactor System in the Effective Removal of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals: the Effect of SRT and Flux Rate

Onur Sozudogru et al.

Summary: The effect of sludge holding time (SRT) and flux rate on the removal of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) by the A/O MBR system was investigated. The study found that SRT and flux rate are important parameters for the removal of certain EDCs, but have limited impact on the removal of others.

New insights into modeling two-step nitrification in activated sludge systems - The effects of initial biomass concentrations, comammox an heterotrophic activities

Mohamad-Javad Mehrani et al.

Summary: This study extended the conventional two-step nitrification model by incorporating complete ammonia oxidation (comammox) and heterotrophic nitrification on soluble microbial products. A new calibration protocol was proposed and the impact of initial biomass concentrations and growth rates on model accuracy was investigated using response surface methodology. The extended model was accurately calibrated and validated, providing a better understanding of the effects of initial biomass composition on two-step nitrification modeling.

A review of the biotransformations of priority pharmaceuticals in biological wastewater treatment processes

P. Y. Nguyen et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the biotransformations of key pharmaceutical compounds (PhACs) in biological wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) processes, highlighting their importance in removing PhACs from WWTP effluents. Critically assessing the biodegradation of 7 relevant PhACs on the EU Watch list, the review also discusses the impact of relevant factors on biological WWTP processes. Promising technologies and operational strategies for controlling PhAC releases are emphasized, along with suggestions for future research needs.
