Allometric releases of nitrogen and phosphorus from sediments mediated by bacteria determines water eutrophication in coastal river basins of Bohai Bay

Jiayuan Liu et al.

Summary: Despite efforts by the Chinese government to reduce land-based pollutant discharge, eutrophication remains a common problem in rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters. This study investigates the mechanisms of eutrophication in the Duliujian River Basin of Bohai Bay. The results suggest that sediment is a major source of nitrogen and phosphorus, and controlling both nutrients is necessary to control water eutrophication in coastal river basins.

Triclosan uptake and transformation by the green algae Euglena gracilis strain Z

Ka Yee Lam et al.

Summary: This research investigated the uptake and transformation of triclosan by Euglena gracilis in open-water treatment wetlands. The study found that algae played a major role in the uptake and transformation of triclosan, and both light and dark conditions affected its transformation. Some transformation products showed minimal accumulation over the experimental period. The findings reveal the mechanism of safe transfer and transformation of triclosan in wetlands.

Yeast assisted algal flocculation for enhancing nutraceutical potential of Chlorella pyrenoidosa

Megha Mathur et al.

Summary: This study describes the use of yeast-assisted algal flocculation to obtain nutrition-enriched algae-yeast flocs, which have higher protein content and a more favorable amino acid ratio compared to individual algae or yeast biomass. The flocs were found to be rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and could be a potential alternative for food applications.

Impact of pyrene (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) pollutant on metabolites and lipid induction in microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana (UUIND6) to produce renewable biodiesel

Krishna Kumar Jaiswal et al.

Summary: Pyrene, an anthropogenic pollutant, was used to evaluate the inhibitory effect on Chlorella sorokiniana. Despite a slight decrease in biomass generation under pyrene stress, lipid biosynthesis was induced, leading to a 24% increase in lipid production, facilitating the production of renewable biodiesel.

Surface attached cultivation and filtration of microalgal biofilm in a ceramic substrate photobioreactaor

Niloofar Dalirian et al.

Summary: This research successfully cultivated Chlorella vulgaris biofilm on a capillary ceramic membrane substrate, with a high moisture content of 80% in the produced biofilm. Further dewatering was possible by applying vacuum to the membrane, and the remaining cells on the membrane could be used as inoculum for re-culturing the algal biofilm, resulting in similar biomass productivity to the initial cultivation.

Effect of catalyst and temperature on the quality and productivity of HTL bio-oil from microalgae: A review

Nishesh Sharma et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is considered an effective technology for biooil production, with algae biomass being recognized as one of the most suitable feedstocks. The choice of temperature, retention time, and catalyst significantly affect the efficiency of HTL products, with a temperature range around 280 +/- 40 degrees C being reported as the most suitable for maximum bio-oil yield. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts have been used to improve bio-oil generation, with heterogeneous catalysts preferred for their advantages such as improved bio-oil yield, easy recovery, and eco-friendly approach.
