Carboxyl and thiol-functionalized magnetic nanoadsorbents for efficient and simultaneous removal of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II) heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions: Studies of adsorption, kinetics, and isotherms

V. P. Kothavale et al.

Summary: In this study, Fe3O4 MNPs were functionalized with thiol (-SH) and carboxylic (-COOH) group using meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA). The MNP-DMSA nanoadsorbent showed effective adsorption of Pb(II), Ni(II), and Cd(II) heavy metal ions simultaneously. The adsorption behavior followed Langmuir and pseudo-second order models, and the nanoadsorbent exhibited good reusability.

Use of a simple magnetic material for the determination and speciation of very low amounts of silver and gold

Ignacio Lopez-Garcia et al.

Summary: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) can be extracted from their ions using magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction with non-functionalised ferrite particles. The extraction is based on controlling the acidity of the medium, without involving oxidation-reduction processes. The analytes are desorbed and determined by electrothermal atomization atomic absorption spectrometry. The method has a high enrichment factor, low detection limits, and good reproducibility.

Bithiophene-based COFs for silver ions detection and removal

Yanbo Zhang et al.

Summary: A stable COF, TAPA-BTDC, has been developed with dual functions of simultaneous detection and removal of silver ions from aqueous solution. It possesses good thermal and chemical stability, high crystallinity, moderate specific surface area, and dense bithiophene-S chelating sites on the pore walls, enabling it to selectively detect and effectively remove silver ions.

Tetraphenylethene-Based Fluorescent Chemosensor with Mechanochromic and Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) Properties for the Selective and Sensitive Detection of Hg2+ and Ag+ Ions in Aqueous Media: Application to Environmental Analysis

Kishor S. Jagadhane et al.

Summary: It is critical to design a novel and simple bifunctional sensor for the selective and sensitive detection of ions in an aqueous media in environmental samples. In this study, a tetraphenylethene hydrazinecarbothioamide probe was synthesized and characterized. The probe exhibited impressive photophysical phenomena, which could lead to a variety of applications. It demonstrated remarkable selectivity and sensitivity toward mercury(II) and silver(I) ions, and it was also explored as a practical sensor and kit for these ions. The results provide a basis for the development of reliable fluorescent probes in the future.

A review on I-III-VI ternary quantum dots for fluorescence detection of heavy metals ions in water: optical properties, synthesis and application

Bambesiwe M. May et al.

Summary: Heavy metal contamination is a significant environmental threat, with water environments being particularly vulnerable. This review highlights the use of non-cadmium photo-luminescent I-III-VI ternary quantum dots (QDs) as fluorescent detectors for heavy metal ions in water. The optical properties and synthesis methods of these QDs are summarized, along with the various detection mechanisms involved. The potential applications in environmental remediation and the associated challenges are also discussed.

Stable magneto-fluorescent gadolinium-doped AgInS2 core quantum dots (QDs) with enhanced photoluminescence properties

Bambesiwe M. May et al.

Summary: This paper presents a facile synthesis of citrate-capped gadolinium-doped AgInS2 quantum dots with stable magnetic properties and enhanced photoluminescence characteristics. The materials exhibit excellent fluorescence properties over time and high gadolinium loading, making them attractive for sensing and removal of pollutants from water environments.
