Microbiological assessment of Pangasianodon hypophthalmus at fish-processing plants in Vietnam

Trang Nguyen Phan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the microbial safety of Pangasius fish from two companies in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta and found that the food safety management systems of these companies had poor-to-moderate performance in terms of microbiological safety. The microbial quality parameters were not in accordance with the reference standards, indicating the need to validate the efficiency of the food safety management systems to improve the safety of the fish product.

Occurrence, antimicrobial resistance, and genetic diversity of Listeria monocytogenes at fish-processing plants in Vietnam

Trang Nguyen Phan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from Pangasius fish in two processing facilities in Vietnam, including occurrence, serogroups, virulence genes, antibiotic susceptibility profiles, and diversity. The results showed a high contamination rate of L. monocytogenes in wash water and fish samples, with the dominant serotypes being 1/2b and the presence of internalin genes in all isolates. Most of the isolates were resistant to cefoxitin, oxacillin, and fosfomycin. Genotyping analysis revealed differences between isolates from different facilities. The study highlights the need to maintain water quality and implement sanitation procedures to reduce L. monocytogenes contamination for ensuring food safety at Pangasius fish processing plants.

Weidong Qian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance in extensively drug-resistant Escherichia coli isolates. The results showed that stronger biofilm formation was correlated with larger proportions of extensively drug-resistant isolates. These findings provide novel insights for the prevention and treatment of E. coli-related infections.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of integrated studies on antimicrobial resistance in Vietnam, with a focus on Enterobacteriaceae, from a One Health perspective

Doan Hoang Phu et al.

Summary: This study used systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the phenotypic profiles and correlations of antimicrobial-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in Vietnam. The study found that E. coli and non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) were the most common bacterial species, and resistance levels were highest to quinolones, 3rd generation of cephalosporins, penicillins, and aminoglycosides. The study also found that E. coli had the highest resistance prevalence against ampicillin.

Slightly acidic hypochlorous water effective against dual-species biofilm of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli strains isolated from Pangasius fish-processing plants

Trang Nguyen Phan et al.

Summary: This study compares the effectiveness of slightly acidic hypochlorous water (SAHW) and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) in reducing biomass and viable cells in biofilms. The results show that SAHW is not only effective in reducing biofilm biomass, but also significantly decreases viable biofilm cells, making it a potential disinfectant for food contact surfaces.

Molecular characterisation and antibiotic resistance profile of Escherichia coli isolated from seafood

M. P. Safeena et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the presence of pathogenic Escherichia coli in seafood from Kochi markets, revealing the emergence of antibiotic resistance in biofilm forming E. coli. The study also found that the majority of isolates showed multidrug resistance to more than 5 antibiotics of four different classes. This highlights the importance of developing control strategies in the fish processing industry and poses a significant treatment challenge to physicians.
