Betelvine (Piper betleL.): A comprehensive insight into its ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, and pharmacological, biomedical and therapeutic attributes

Protha Biswas et al.

Summary: Piper betleL., or betel vine, is an economically and medicinally important crop primarily cultivated in South East Asian countries. It possesses a wide range of pharmacological properties, such as anti-proliferation, anti-cancer, neuropharmacological, analgesic, and antioxidant effects. Preclinical experiments indicate its potential as a therapeutic candidate without cytotoxicity. Further research is needed to understand its molecular mechanisms, clinical applications, structure-activity relationships, bioavailability, and synergistic interactions with other drugs.

Research Progress on Antibacterial Activities and Mechanisms of Natural Alkaloids: A Review

Yumei Yan et al.

Summary: Alkaloids are nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds isolated mainly from plants. They exhibit diverse antibacterial activities by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, changing cell membrane permeability, inhibiting bacterial metabolism, and blocking nucleic acid and protein synthesis. These natural products represent a potential new source for developing antibiotics to combat drug-resistant bacterial infections.

Transcriptional Profiling Reveals the Importance of RcrR in the Regulation of Multiple Sugar Transportation and Biofilm Formation in Streptococcus mutans

Tao Gong et al.

Summary: The RcrR gene plays a crucial role in the growth, biofilm formation, and multiple sugar transportation of Streptococcus mutans. Its deletion leads to impaired biofilm formation and altered expression of sugar transportation-related genes. RcrR acts as a transcription activator to regulate the two PTS systems and influences sugar transportation and biofilm formation.
