Study on the extension of the dynamic benchmark system of per capita carbon emissions in China's county

Summary: This study investigates the carbon intensity reduction targets and constructs a dynamic benchmark system of per capita carbon emissions in China's counties. The results show that China's counties can be divided into three categories, and Changxing County in Zhejiang Province is used as a case study to verify the dynamic benchmark. This study provides coordinated directions for counties to improve economic development and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

How US Shrinking Cities Plan for Change: Comparing Population Projections and Planning Strategies in Depopulating US Cities

Summary: This research examines the mismatch between the reality of depopulation in 35 U.S. cities and the planning strategies they have adopted. It analyzes the comprehensive plans of these cities to determine their acknowledgment of past depopulation trends, projections for future population changes, and planning strategies in response to depopulation. The findings show that most cities acknowledge depopulation but have optimistic population projections for the future. Despite this, various planning strategies are used regardless of a city's acknowledgment/acceptance of population loss.

Spatiotemporal evolution and influencing factors of urban shrinkage in the Yellow River Basin, China

Urban shrinkage in a developing context: Rethinking China's present and future trends

Summary: This study examines urban shrinkage in Chinese cities using land-use data and nightlight data. The study found that only a small percentage of cities experienced significant urban population shrinkage, primarily resource-based cities in the Northeast region. Lack of employment opportunities, stagnant economic growth, and low birth rate were identified as important drivers of urban shrinkage. Low levels of urbanization and intra-regional rural-to-urban migration helped prevent urban shrinkage, but it may increase in the future due to unbalanced regional development and increasing urbanization. The study suggests that sustainable development of urbanization should be promoted to deal with and prevent urban shrinkage.

Economic effects of conversion from county (or county-level city) to municipal district in China

Summary: Administrative division plays an important role in promoting urbanization and economic growth in China. This study examines the impact of converting counties into municipal districts on economic growth using panel data from 1998 to 2016. The results demonstrate that this conversion significantly promotes economic growth, especially in larger cities. However, in smaller cities, the conversion may have a negative impact on economic development. Additionally, the reform in eastern and central regions shows more significant effects compared to western and northeast regions. The study suggests that the optimal range of development intensity for municipal districts is between 15% and 20%.
