Once an entrepreneur, always an entrepreneur? Entrepreneurial identity, job characteristics, and voluntary turnover of former entrepreneurs in paid employment

Jie Feng et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the employment of former entrepreneurs in established firms. Former entrepreneurs tend to leave jobs sooner than employees without entrepreneurial experience, with the effect mediated by entrepreneurial identity. Employees with entrepreneurial identity stay longer in jobs with favorable characteristics, such as high work autonomy and entrepreneurial opportunities.

The Evaluation of Founder Failure and Success by Hiring Firms: A Field Experiment

Tristan L. Botelho et al.

Summary: Organizations evaluate founder experience with two perspectives: advantage or disadvantage. In a field experiment, former founders received 43% fewer callbacks compared to nonfounders, and this difference was driven by older hiring firms. The founder penalty was greatest for former successful founders, who received 33% fewer callbacks than former failed founders. Concerns about fit and commitment have a stronger influence on the evaluation of former founders than information asymmetry about quality.

Jacob A. Waddingham et al.

Summary: There is limited research on former entrepreneurs re-entering the traditional workforce. This study conducted three studies to explore the challenges these individuals may face. Missing the Forest for the Trees: Prior Entrepreneurial Experience, Role Identity, and Entrepreneurial Creativity

Siran Zhan et al.

Summary: Previous research has suggested that the effect of prior entrepreneurial experience is consistent across different contexts. However, this study demonstrates that prior entrepreneurial experience can manifest differently in different contexts. It shows that such experience provides an advantage in avoiding being overly influenced by situational role identities and helps in achieving the dual goal of novelty and commercial viability. Additionally, experienced entrepreneurs are better at managing tensions between their long-term and situational identities.

When leader-member exchange differentiation improves work group functioning: The combined roles of differentiation bases and reward interdependence

Joo Hun Han et al.

Summary: This study, drawing on social hierarchy theory, developed a contingency model of leader-member exchange differentiation, showing that different levels of LMX differentiation can positively or negatively affect group cooperation and social undermining, depending on whether it is based on performance or personal liking, and how it is moderated by reward interdependence. The interactions among LMX differentiation, its bases, and reward interdependence are then hypothesized to impact subsequent group performance.
