Jing Li et al.

Summary: This study explores a beginning teacher's counter story experiences in a high-needs secondary school in rural China. The research analyzes storied data through interviews, observations, and digital photos and videos. The purpose is to investigate how the participant teacher lived counter stories with students and colleagues amid competing and conflicting dominant narratives. The study discusses the relationship between teacher reflection, 'intelligent rebellion', teacher community, and a teacher's sense of self and construction of counter stories. This research provides insights into teacher retention and development in a professionally challenging rural school landscape at local, national, and international levels.
