Twofold Advantages of Face Processing With or Without Visual Awareness

Summary: The study found advantages in processing faces over other object categories, both with and without visual awareness. It compared perceptual processes of genuine faces, face-like objects, and non-face-like objects to evaluate contributions from face-like configurations and face-specific local attributes. While illusory face perception from face-like objects relied on global configuration information, processing advantages for real faces and face-like objects were observed in invisible conditions, with visible face advantage exclusive to genuine faces.
