Restorative urban environments for healthy cities: a theoretical model for the study of restorative experiences in urban built settings

Summary: Urban landscapes are becoming the main ecosystem for human life, but urban living can lead to poor psychological health. Restorative environments research can provide significant insights for the strategy of healthy cities. Future research should consider urban psychological restoration in a broader sense and explore the restorative potential of all urban built settings.

Which is primary: Preference or perceived instoration?

Summary: There is a lack of consensus on whether preference informs evaluations of urban and natural scenes as psychologically restorative or instorative, or whether instorative perceptions inform preference. In two online experimental studies, it was found that evaluations of the instorative benefits of a scene are better predictors of ratings of preference than preference ratings of perceived instorative benefits, for both natural and urban scenes. Perceived instoration and affective appraisals were found to be similarly strong and independent mediators, with their relative share in affecting preference or perceived instorativeness not reliably differentiated.

Exploring psychological restoration in favorite indoor and outdoor urban places using a top-down perspective

Summary: This study examined restorative experiences in favorite indoor and outdoor urban places among university students and staff in five western countries. Perceived restorative potential, place attachment, and place identification were found to be the strongest predictors of subjective restoration, while personality traits did not significantly impact restorative experiences. The research extends the scope of restoration studies by considering both indoor and outdoor environments and highlighting the role of certain top-down characteristics in restorative experiences.

Still not that bad for the grey city: A field study on the restorative effects of built open urban places

Mikel Subiza-Perez et al.

Summary: This study examined the restoration experience of university students in two squares in a European city and found that spending 20 minutes in these places improved participants' attentional performance and reduced negative affect. Nature orientedness was found to be significantly related to some of the pretest-posttest changes, suggesting that built open urban settings can provide restorative benefits.
