The impact of China's R&D subsidies on R&D investment, technological upgrading and economic growth

Philipp Boeing et al.

Summary: This study finds that R&D subsidies have a positive effect on the number of R&D personnel in large and medium-sized enterprises, despite reducing private R&D expenditures. In addition, R&D subsidies can promote technological upgrading, capital deepening, and economic growth, but there is also evidence of some misallocation of research-oriented public funds.

How do R&D agglomeration and economic policy uncertainty affect the innovative performance of Chinese high-tech industry?

Jiangfeng Ye et al.

Summary: This study examines the linkage between R&D agglomeration and innovative performance in the Chinese high-tech industry (HTI) and explores the moderating role and threshold effect of economic policy uncertainty (EPU). The findings show that R&D personnel and capital agglomeration have positive impacts on the innovative performance of the Chinese HTI, with the effect being positively moderated by EPU. The relationship between R&D personnel agglomeration and innovative performance exhibits an inverted U-shape, while the relationship between R&D capital agglomeration and innovative performance follows a positive U-shaped pattern.

How does institutional environment in the digital context affect technology entrepreneurship? The moderating roles of government digitalization and gender

Hao Jiao et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the impact of the institutional environment in the digital context on technology entrepreneurship using institutional theory. Using data from various sources, the study builds a comprehensive database covering multiple countries and individuals. The findings show that different dimensions of the institutional environment in the digital context have varying effects on individual technology entrepreneurship. Exposure to digital networks and innovative culture positively influence technology entrepreneurship, while intellectual property rights protection has a negative impact. The study also reveals that government digitalization moderates these relationships. Additionally, the effect of innovative culture on technology entrepreneurship is stronger for females than males in the digital context.

The impact of emerging market competition on innovation and business strategy: Evidence from Canada

Mu-Jeung Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that the innovation response of firms to Chinese import competition depends on the type of innovation, with incentives for product innovation stimulated by competition while process innovation incentives decline. Firms that initially pursue process innovation strategies and survive may have higher profits post-event but are more likely to exit ex-ante, while firms pursuing product innovation strategies may have higher profits if they survive without significant impact on exit. Both findings are in line with the theory that innovator performance depends on the balance of innovation incentive effects and competitive failure risk.
