Provision of Allotment Gardens and Its Influencing Factors: A Case Study of Tokyo, Japan

Hua Zheng et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the provision of allotment gardens (AGs) and its influencing factors in Tokyo using ArcGIS. The results reveal spatial characteristics of AGs, such as their concentration in urbanization promotion areas and within a certain distance from the center of Tokyo. The study also identifies population density, land price, and the ratio of productive green space as influencing factors for AG provision.

Perceptions on barriers and opportunities for integrating urban agri-green roofs: A European Mediterranean compact city case

Perla Zambrano-Prado et al.

Summary: The study examines perceived barriers and opportunities in implementing urban agri-green roofs in Barcelona, with stakeholders discussing social, environmental, legal, technological, and economic factors. Main barriers are lack of information, Mediterranean climate, regulations, investment, and roof conditions, while opportunities include social cohesion, quality of life improvement, regulations, profits, and aesthetics. The impact of UAGR is distributed evenly within buildings and cities, with limited global impact, and opportunities and barriers mostly arise during different stages of the roof's life cycle.

Environmental impacts and resource use of urban agriculture: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Erica Dorr et al.

Summary: Environmental merits are a common motivation for urban agriculture projects, and life cycle assessment (LCA) is used to quantify environmental impacts. Recent LCAs of urban agriculture have shown mixed conclusions about their environmental performance. Issues with quality, consistency, and data variability in LCAs prevent definitive conclusions about the environmental impacts and resource use of urban agriculture.

Promoting Urban Agriculture and Its Opportunities and Challenges-A Global Review

Chethika Gunasiri Wadumestrige Dona et al.

Summary: Academic studies indicate that urban agriculture in developed countries focuses more on social, health, and educational benefits, while developing countries are more concerned with economic and ecological needs. Research tends to favor the exploration of community gardens in developed countries, with less attention paid to the challenges, beneficiary groups, and government support for urban agriculture.

Review of ecosystem services in a bio-based circular economy and governance mechanisms

Rong-Gang Cong et al.

Summary: This paper reviews a type of local bio-based circular economy where food waste is recycled to produce multiple ecosystem services, and proposes potential regulatory and supporting mechanisms to incentivize successful implementation of the economy. The study suggests that a multi-level governance system combining top-down and bottom-up approaches could be more effective than a single regulatory instrument in promoting industry self-governance and sustainable urban transitions.

Assessing motivations and perceptions of stakeholders in urban agriculture: a review and analytical framework

Gianluca Di Fiore et al.

Summary: Interest in urban agriculture has been growing, with the compatibility with urban social context and stakeholders' attitudes being crucial for successful implementation. A literature review identified main approaches to assessing stakeholders' and farmers' perceptions, leading to the design of an integrated framework to support the development of context-tailored analytical approaches. This study aims to address conflicts between UA practitioners and urban stakeholders, adapting implementation to contextual factors, and increasing the possibility of developing successful UA strategies for urban food systems.

Environmental drivers and sustainable transition of dachas in Eastern Europe: An analytical overview

Anton Shkaruba et al.

Summary: Dachas, a common feature in peri-urban landscapes of post-Soviet countries, are at a turning point and have the potential for sustainable transformation through the creation of appropriate incentive structures. This study aims to understand the origins, transitions, and opportunities for sustainability transformation of dachas across Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. Findings suggest that there is no one-size-fits-all governance approach, and transformative changes require proper information systems, regulatory frameworks, and restructuring of existing actor relationships.
