Forest carbon sink in the US (1870-2012) driven by substitution of forest ecosystem service flows

Andreas Magerl et al.

Summary: The study found that the proportion of industrial wood in total forest biomass harvest in the United States continued to increase, while the demand for fuelwood and grazing gradually decreased, mainly due to shifts in feed and energy sources, as well as the substitution of fossil fuels for fuelwood. These changes have helped alleviate pressure on forest ecosystems to some extent.

Determinants and Challenges of Community Sand Forest Management in Vietnam

Hoang Huy Tuan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the determinants and challenges of community sand forest management in coastal north central Vietnam and discusses policy implications. The study finds that local people have been using village conventions to manage sand forests for centuries but the management is confusing and inefficient due to the neglect of traditional organizations. Local people face challenges such as conflicts over the use of sand forests and a lack of recognition of their legal rights.

The challenges of collective PES: Insights from three community-based models in Vietnam

Van Thi Hai Nguyen et al.

Summary: Vietnam has implemented a Payment for Forest Environmental Services (PES) policy, which includes individual and collective models. This paper examines three types of collective PES models in Vietnam and evaluates their advantages and disadvantages. However, none of these collective models have achieved fully successful outcomes in terms of collective action.

Household final energy footprints in Nepal, Vietnam and Zambia: composition, inequality and links to well-being

Marta Baltruszewicz et al.

Summary: This study examines household-level energy footprints in Nepal, Vietnam, and Zambia and finds that households achieving well-being have much lower housing energy use compared to the average. They have a 60%-80% lower energy footprint of residential fuel use, indicating a strong link between well-being and efficient housing energy use.

Attribution of typhoon-induced torrential precipitation in Central Vietnam, October 2020

Linh N. Luu et al.

Summary: In October 2020, Central Vietnam experienced heavy rain and flooding due to tropical depressions and typhoons, resulting in significant casualties and economic losses. While the extreme rainfall event was not significantly influenced by human-induced climate change, investing in disaster risk reduction for this type of hazard is crucial given the scale of damage. More climate change impact investigations on extreme events in the future are needed to enhance adaptation and mitigation efforts.

Pet Macaques in Vietnam: An NGO's Perspective

Brooke Catherine Aldrich et al.

Summary: Macaques are illegally kept as pets in Vietnam, causing significant harm. Data from 2015-2019 shows at least 1254 cases of macaque possession, with confiscations and releases of various species recorded. Collaboration between organizations and authorities is crucial to address and understand the issue.

Analysis of Acacia hybrid timber value chains: A case study of woodchip and furniture production in central Vietnam

La Thi Tham et al.

Summary: The research compares the financial and economic performance of three typical Acacia hybrid timber VCs in Thua Thien Hue province, central Vietnam, finding that while the woodchip VC is financially profitable, its economic performance is lower compared to the FSC-certified furniture VC, which fundamentally contributes to economic development. The study provides valuable insights for understanding the interactions between economic, social, and environmental aspects in the utilization of timber and forest-based products, with a theoretical proposition suggesting that stakeholders/VCs facing uncertainty or high competition can enhance financial performance through vertical and horizontal coordination.

The October 13, 2020, deadly rapid landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Phong Dien, Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam

Pham Van Tien et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of a rapid rotational landslide that occurred in Phong Xuan commune, Phong Dien district, Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam on October 13, 2020, resulting in the death of 13 rescue team members. The analysis indicates that the entire landslide had a volume of approximately 81,550 m(3) and consisted of lower and upper blocks. The lower block of the landslide mass started sliding first, followed by the upper block.

Changes in energy and livestock systems largely explain the forest transition in Austria (1830-1910)

Simone Gingrich et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the importance of enabling conditions for the forest transition in Austria between 1830 and 1910, showing that the absence of any key factors would lead to total depletion of forest biomass by 1910. The study also highlights the significance of woodfuel substitution and livestock efficiency gains in driving forest change.

Orchid Obscurity: Understanding Domestic Trade in Wild-Harvested Orchids in Viet Nam

Leigh-Anne Bullough et al.

Summary: Illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade is a well-known conservation issue, but the under-reported and under-researched global plant trade, especially within countries' borders, also poses a significant threat. Using a mixed-methods approach, researchers in Northern Vietnam identified five groups of actors involved in trading wild-harvested orchids, highlighting the complexity and demand for rare, wild plants in both domestic and international trade. Addressing this issue requires recognizing it as a growing conservation concern and developing diverse approaches to understand and intervene in the full supply chain.

Acacia Plantation Development and the Configuration of Tree Farmers' Agricultural Assets and Land Management-A Survey in Central Vietnam

Roland Cochard et al.

Summary: Since 1990, acacia-based tree plantations in Vietnam have rapidly expanded, supporting a multi-billion-dollar export-oriented wood industry. Some tree farmer associations have started producing sawlogs under FSC certification. Farmers planted acacia in different periods through state programs and now own large plantations, with some also retaining plots for woodchip production.
