Global, regional, and national burden of 12 mental disorders in 204 countries and territories, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Alize J. Ferrari et al.

Summary: The Global Burden of Diseases Study in 2019 showed that mental disorders remained among the top ten leading causes of burden worldwide, with no reduction in burden since 1990. The majority of the burden in disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) came from years lived with disability (YLDs).

A randomized controlled trial of gaze-contingent music reward therapy for major depressive disorder

Dana Shamai-Leshem et al.

Summary: The study tested the efficacy of a gaze-contingent attention bias modification procedure for major depressive disorder, showing a reduction in gaze time on sad faces but not generalizing to novel faces. However, both groups demonstrated significant reductions in depression symptoms post-treatment, with no clear differential clinical effects observed.

Cognitive and behavioural flexibility: neural mechanisms and clinical considerations

Lucina Q. Uddin

Summary: Cognitive and behavioral flexibility, critical for adapting thoughts and actions under changing circumstances, can be enhanced through cognitive training, physical activity, and bilingual experience. Brain mechanisms and functional brain networks play important roles in supporting flexibility, while it can also be compromised in various diseases.

Manipulating avoidance motivation to modulate attention bias for negative information in dysphoria: An eye-tracking study

Summary: The study revealed that individuals with depression tend to prioritize attention to stimuli associated with avoiding negative consequences. Additionally, neutral stimuli associated with avoiding punishment can aid in faster disengagement of attention from negative pictures.

How Flexible are we in Regulating our Emotions? A Discussion on Current Conceptual Frameworks of Emotion Regulation Flexibility, Requirements for Future Research and Potential Practical Implications

Alvaro Sanchez-Lopez

Summary: The study of emotional regulation (ER) flexibility is a relatively young research field that lacks common integrative views. Understanding the variation in the use of ER strategies across time can be achieved by considering the complex interplay of personal characteristics, situational demands, and motivational goals. Future research can advance the science of ER flexibility through programmatic research lines and the integration of cognitive mechanisms.

Looking for carrots, watching out for sticks: A gaze-contingent approach towards training contextual goal-dependent affective attention flexibility

Malvika Godara et al.

Summary: The study tested a novel attention flexibility training paradigm using eye-tracking, which resulted in significantly improved attention switching speed in participants post-training. In a presentation task, participants in the training condition displayed a more flexible pattern of attending to emotional faces, while those in the control condition remained rigidly attentive towards negative faces. The findings provide preliminary evidence for the role of context-based attention flexibility in dysphoria and suggest potential future clinical applications.
